My 99 GMC Sierra 1/2 abs motor came on yestday and the only way I can get it to turn off is pull the fuse. Any thoughts. I disconected the battery for a minuet or two hooked it back up and the same thing. Key on or off the abs still runs. It runs a little faster with the truck on.

Its the ABS module that is located inside the frame under the driver. The Dealer quoted me $700 for just the part. I pulled the fuse and left it alone. I have been running for 4 years with the stupid lights on and no abs.

Most likely it is a shorted chip in the ABS Module,

my son repaired one for a freind recently on a 2000 tahoe

and it had the same sympton as yours. They can be repaired.

I have a 99 Sierra 2500 and this happened to mine a few years ago. I have been running around with the fuse pulled since. I have researched this problem many times and it all boils down to a switch within the ABS Module.

There are a couple of people that will fix this for around $150 bucks with a 2-3 day turnaround but you have to pull the ABS module off yourself and mail it to them and then put it back on, not too invasive of a procedure for your diy mechanic. The site mentioned earlier is one that I researched for a couple of years and it has a lot of good info about this problem and all of the how to's in fixing it. http://www.modulemaster.com/gmabsrepair.html

I took my truck into a local GM service shop and had a few recalls done (for free obviously) and to fix the infamous driver side window motor failure (not free). Upon completing the recalls (the low mph wheel sensor in particular) the service manager came and told me about the abs module failure which I knew he would find as soon as he plugged the fuse back in. He told me that GM knows that there is a problem with the abs module on this years' system and they would see what they can do to get me a good price for the repair. I had already investigated this and checked with many service departments and the average price was around $1200 for the repair. He told me that they would do it for $500.00 so I went ahead and had it done.

I could have done the $150.00 fix but now I have the whole unit covered under warranty for atleast a year and I feel a little bit better about GM fixing it than just having the switch replaced by someone else. You might be able to negotiate a good repair price with your local dealer's service dept.

I am not sure this helps you or not but I know that when I was researching this problem for myself I felt better knowing that others had this problem and it was just not me, plus...misery loves company ...right?

Anyway, good luck!

Stu
