Do I even have a regular Ignition wire anymore?

I splurged & bought a FSM for my 2005 GMC Sierra. The first thing I tried to use it for was wiring diagram to install a Radar Detector in my 2005 GMC Sierra. I tapped into the ignition & ground wires in the overhead console - or so I thought.

 

The OHC wiring shows three wires - orange, black, and white (sorta gray actually).

 

The FSM says the orange wire comes from ignition sense. I used this for the switched +12V for the radar detector, but this isn't a 'normal' switched +12V.

 

Specifically, when I leave the truck it doesn't shut off. But it shuts off sometime later, as when I enetr, it's off - and doesn't turn on when I start the truck. Only after (get this) turning on the map light in the OHC does the radar detector turn on. Sorta like a James Bond switch, but I was just looking for a 'normal' ignition lead.

 

I don't suppose one of those exists in this console, does it?

 

(I even have a Painless Wiring Aux fuse block to provide aux power for my other accessories, but even this needs a 'real' Ignition feed to turn the relays in it on & off - so I'll need this answer for those too!)

Retained accessory power is not handled by a power wire to a component. All items that are on RAP have a constant 12 volt to them and are turned on and off by a data message sent over the data line by the BCM telling that component to shut off (or turn on).

 

The one exception that I know of is a sunroof. There's 12 volts for the relay that's turned on and off by the BCM.

FSM - Factory Service Manual - from Helm. All five glorious volumes for my truck!

OHC = Overhead Console

 

So - is there a 'real' +12V switched ignition lead somewhere? Any chance it's in the Overhead Console somewhere?

Yeah, definitely a pet peeve of mine. They're okay if they're "official" acronyms, but it really irks me when someone just takes the first three letters of some phrase and expects everyone to know what they're talking about.

Of course there's one SOMEWHERE. Right at the ign. switch/harness would be one spot for sure. I can't tell you on the console because there are several variations of the overhead console. What factory components are in it?

Well, I once worked at a place that actually published a dictionary of their abbreviations - and even abbreviated the title! Irony of ironies! But one man's standard is another man's foreign.

 

Anyway, it had the factory overhead mini console with just the two lights, two switches & the pocket. But I plugged in a factory homelink console I bought on eBay - it's the same size & uses the same connector & just plugs right into the factory harness.

 

Any help would be, um, helpful!

I'm unable to find anything in the console that is ignition powered. Looks like you'll have to run a wire under the headliner, down the pillar molding and get your ignition power directly at the fuse block on the left side or at the ign. switch wiring harness at the column. Ignition power is *USUALLY* pink colored wiring.

I tapped my radar detector into the wires running out of the back of the mirror.

 

Pink wire on the top row, black wire on the bottom...Turns on and off with the key.

Looks like it may be different for the '05 pickups though.

You're right, I see there is ign. power at the mirror harness. It's a yellow wire, pin 13 at the mirror connector.

 

Of course this is assuming the mirror is not one of the plain ones with no wiring to it at all.

I used that same power supply to power up an aftermarket sattelite radio set up. That circuit is powered for 20 minutes after the ignition is turned to off. The second you press unlock on the vehicle's keyfob or power the ignition back on, the circuit is re-energized. It threw me for a loop as well !!
