HVAC Question

My '05 Silverado just rolled past 26,000 miles and now air blows out of the vents even when it's shut off. It used to be that air would "leak out" of the vents when it was shut off and I was driving at highway speeds; but that was almost not noticeable. In the last week, when I approach highway speeds with the HVAC shut off, air comes out as if it was turned to the '2' on the controls. (Noticeable and annoying)

I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this, and if there is an easy fix.

A certain amount of air will always come out of the vents while moving. It's part of the fresh air system. The other half of the system is the two outlets on the rear of the cab between the cab and the bed. I'm not sure why it would blow so hard though. Maybe a flap got stuck open and is letting more air through than normal. I live in Arizona and the air is always blowing in my truck. I never turn it off.

My 03 does the same thing. The only way to stop this from happening is to turn on the recycle mode, the left button next to the A/C button.

This, in my opinion, is another flaw in GM trucks. So when you turn the climate controls off, they still aren't off??? Yup, that's what it says in the owners manual. So I looked at my wife and asked, "So why did they even put an 'off' position on the dial to begin with??" Neither of us have ever found the answer to that question. Stupid...pure stupidity. But, that's GM engineering at it's finest.

 

To answer your question...it could be that one of the doors in the dash got stuck. I normally keep mine set to the "feet" setting...that directs the air away from your face. But last week while on the "feet" setting, it was blowing pretty hard. I cycled the dial counter-clockwise as far as it would go, and then back to "feet" and it fixed the problem. So I guess the doors that direct the airflow were stuck. I have 9,500 miles on my truck. Try that and see if it works.

Looks like your truck is still under warranty.. Take that sucker in and let them worry with it or let them tell you its normal..air coming in as if it were set on the number 2 setting seems strange...

recirc mode recirculates the air but your AC compressor is running.

In the '05 model year (or atleast in mine) there is a little wheel under all but the one on the center stack.

The reason that you cannot shut off the air flow or blower on vehicles since the 70's is that people got carbon monixide poisoning with the vents closed and the fed's required the MFR's to ventilate 100% of the time.

It’s not the fresh air that I mind, it’s the volume of air (fresh or otherwise). Especially when I've got a passenger riding in the middle seat, it’s annoying. I guess I'm not alone if every other vehicle in the world has an option to turn your HVAC on, or OFF.
