Mystery Ding

Last night, while driving about 70 mph on the highway, my Envoy let loose with a single ding from the warning chime. No warning lights came on and all gauges looked good. A few miles later, it did it again. We got off the highway, made a couple of stops and never heard the ding again for probably 10 miles of driving. Later, back on the highway again and another couple of dings a few miles apart. Got off the highway and took the backroads to get home (about 10 miles) and nothing. Any of you have ideas what may be causing this?

I've heard 2 mysterious dings before but neither may be what you are experiencing. There are lots of things that cause a ding sound in a vehicle. Anyway, the first one was leaving the signal on for too long - this will certainly cause a ding. The second was a faulty fuel gauge which would register as "low" every once in a while and cause a random ding while driving. From what i have seen though, GM vehicles dont "ding" when low fuel is detected (my sierra just has the "low fuel" light) so i doubt this would be the problem.

Well, I know for sure that it wasn't a turn signal. As far as fuel goes, I was at about 1/4 tank when it first dinged so I thought that might be the problem. We stopeed and filled up, got back on the highway and within a couple of miles got another ding. Thanks for the ideas.

It happened to my wife. One day she asked me to take her car for a ride because she was hearing an intermittent beeping sound every several minutes. She thought something was wrong with the car. I rode with her and after a couple minutes heard the sound. I immediately realized that it was the cell phone in her purse signaling low battery.

Yep, we checked seat belts. There were cell phones in the car but if that was the cause of the ding then it should have happened off the highway as well as on. The ding only occurred while we were on the expressway going about 70-75 mph. In all of our driving since that night (no expressway) we have not heard the ding since.
