NP 261 Transfer Case help

What has to be done to split a NP 261? I have a leak where the 2 halves join together. I pulled the t-case and removed all the bolts. But I can only split it about 1/2 inch. Is there something else I need to do to get it apart? Or just pull harder?

Thanks

Well, I got the transfer case apart today and found out the leak wasn't coming from between the 2 halves. There was a hole worn in the case from the oil pump. I only have 75,000 miles on the pickup and thought this was premature. So I went to the dealer and they told me there was no TSB or recalls. So basically, I'm SOL.

Has anyone else had this problem? I found this on ebay while looking for a new rear case. NP 261 It talks about the same problem I have.

If you have over 50,000 miles I would start looking for an oil leak from the transfer case. It would be cheaper to buy a rear half than the whole transfer case. BTY, the dealer told me the rear case would be about $350. Does this sound right?

Here's another link from just a few weeks ago...

Google search Merchant Automotive. They have new rear halves and an upgrade kit for just this problem--the pump housing is rubbing a hole due to a poor design. Don't weld the spot where it leaked--Merchant won't warranty his part should their be a failure on a fixed case.

By the way, I assume you figured out that you need a set of heavy duty snap ring pliers if you got the case off. Merchant Automotive also has instructions on how to do their upgrade kit.

I just did the upgrade with the M/A kit last weekend. It wasn't bad at all. It took about 3 hours to do. The instructions are straight forward and easy to understand. I replaced the O-ring while I was in there and if you are going to go with M/As new rear housing you will also need a new driveshaft seal. The whole thing was about $500, but it sure beats having a dealer do it and/or puking your T/C.

another one stopped by the houdini ring. Glad you figured out how to get it apart. There are only about 10,000 out there with the pump rub problem.

I did the Merchant Automotive upgrade in my truck. There was some wear. The rattle clip was still there, but it was no longer attached at the tab anymore. A buddy's dad has an 03' 2500 Suburban who actually had a hole in his transfer case at 100K. I have heard of it happen as early as 40K. The transfer case metal is somewhat soft---don't drop the transfer case, it will split like and egg.

Here's another good link of a TV show that talks about this upgrade:

Dump Question time...

Is this problem more common with the push button servo operated transfer case's and not so much with the manual lever operated NP261's??? Or maybe it's just my little world I live in that the folks who have seen this problem had the servo operated T-case? Just curious now is all...

There are just more electric shift units out there.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
