1989 GMC Ext. cab

I have a 1989 GMC ext cab pickup that has the (not sure what to call it)....black to white, half moon style gauges. I have had a similar pickup in the past with the same dashboard gauges and tried to replace them with a better looking "needle" style gauges from a 90-92 style pickup, but ran into a problem.....only a couple of the gauges/needles would actually work. I even took the plug in that goes into the rear of the guages off the 90-92 style and wired it into my wiring harness, and most of the wires matched colors except for having a few extra wires that had no home in the new style connector. That would probably explain why not all the gauges worked, but is there a way to have all the wires match up and have a home in the connector and make all the gauges work properly??

My question is.......now that I own another pickup like this and would like to replace the dashboard gauges with needle style (because two of my existing gauges dont work), what would I have to do to make all the gauges work properly and wire in correctly? Or can it even be done without having to rewire the entire truck....
