ABS Problem - Kicks in at low speeds & dry road

I seem to be having the same ABS problem that all the '99+ trucks have. (ABS kicks in at low speeds on dry surfaces even when brake pedal isnt being touched) My truck is a '98 though and as far as I know there is no recall for my year for this problem.

I have been told to "clean" the front wheel speed sensors, but how do you do that? I took them off and tryed cleaning them all up and cleaning the surface they mount on, however that didnt do anything, in fact its gotten worse. Now I roll around parking lots with my ABS running when my brakes arnt even on.

Is this a problem with the wheel speed sensors or something else? Thanks for any help.....I should probably get this fixed before I run into a car or through the garage...

It sounds like a different problem altogether. The '99 and up problem only occured when braking at slow speeds, not when the pedal was not touched.

agreed. This sounds more like the ABS module itself may be ready to crap out.

My 2000 has been doing the same thing. I changed brakes all around and it was only doing it when applying brakes but tonight is pretty cold and I hit a bump and now they seem to be coming on when not on the brake! How can I check for this? I believe it is mounted right below the driver's seat. Is that right? Any idea how much to replace and how difficult?

right on location on side of frame there. its not cheap. past 3 or 400 i think. not counting labor, and some must be programmed. other than thats its just a wire and a bunch of lines. tho youll have to bleed and you can bleed the abs in the traditional way

I have to respectfully disagree with this. I had a customer complaining about the same thing. It never would happen to me but the service writer and customer got it to happen. After about a week of the vehicle not acting up so I could catch it the manager wanted me to do the recall clean em up and replace the sensors just to see. I was positive that wasn't going to fix it, because of what you said It's only in a low speed stop situation. Did the repair and it's fixed. d**n I hate when a pencil pusher without a clue makes a lucky guess.
