Blower motor resistor/fan switch/ground??

Hey all;

I have a blower motor inop in an 05' silverado 1500, regular old controls. The problem started 1 year ago with speed 5 going out. About a month ago, speeds 1-4 went out as well. From the forum, I thought it was the resistor pack so I replaced both the pack and the pack connector. The old one had burns on 2 of the 7 wires (red and black). With the new stuff installed, speeds 1-4 worked again, but 5 was still inop. 3 days later, 1-4 went out again (no blower motor). I visually checked the newly installed connector and resistor pack and they looked ok, no burn marks or melting. I checked the fan switch and its connector and they looked fine.

My thinking is a bad ground somewhere but I could not figure out where the stuff is grounded. Wires seem to go from the fan switch to a connector block on the far right (passenger) side of the dash. From there it goes to the resistor pack. All of that looked ok.

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

I thought grounding would not be an issue by this time. My '89 had grounding issues for the heater controls for most of it's 18 yrs. I recently got sick of it again and pulled out the factory wiring book I had bought so many years ago. It identifies exactly where the ground locations are for the heater and cab accessories. In my case it was under a plastic cover on the engine firewall (under the hood) passenger side. Chevy only put a sheet metal screw into the firewall and called it a ground. I could not find an actual braided ground line, like the one going from the engine to the frame. The plastic cover had 'ground' and 'fuel relay' molded into it.

I ran a 16 ga wire with soldered eyes from a frame bolt to the sheetmetal ground screws under the plastic cover. It helped to remove a little paint around the screw head in case there are other grounds used. The heater works full time now.

In your case, maybe you can download the factory manuals from an on-line GM member or a website. It will positively identify the ground locations, you might check for that plastic firewall wiring junction. It could be one of the things they never changed. Good luck

My 05 first had a problem with the resistor. They replaced it 2 times, the second time they had to replace the whole blower motor, he said it fried. Luckily it was still under warranty.

Out of curiosity, when you run your a/c does it make horrible noise? Mine sounds like a jet...dealer said it's normal....they're all loud.

Good luck,

Lisa
