Adding DIC--new radio req'd??

I went to the dealer yesterday to get the BCM reprogrammed in anticipation of adding the buttons for the DIC. I was told that the reprogram could not be done until the buttons were in place and that the radio might not respond to the steering wheel controls--that the radio woudl have to be replaced. Has anyone had dealings with the radio and know if it will work or not--it is a CD/Cassette unit.
