NBS 6.0 getting tune tomorrow

I decided to get my tune dune by nelson performance. It was about an 8 hour drive to San Antonio, but i had spring break, and even though i haven't gone in for the tune yet i must say San Antonio is definitely worth the drive itself. The town has really exceded my expectations , and hopefully the tune will just be the icing on the cake. Just on a side note it's been raining here in SA, I was leaving the Marriott to go eat dinner at the Towers Of america, long story short when i pulled out the roads were extremely slick and the truck went sideways as i was moving into traffic, luckily the stabilitrack kicked in and staightened me out. I've never been a fan of the system but it really saved me from a mishap tonight. Thanks GM. I'll update tomorrow after the tune...

You are going to love it.. Allen is getting some good numbers on the new 6.0.. Just him taking the 4 second delay out of WOT should do wonders.. a little advice.. dont wear out too much rubber tomorrow

I hope so, between the 33's and the locking rear i usually don't have to worry about leaving too much rubber, i also keep two take off rims and tires in the back to really smooth out the ride, but i guess she was feeling abnormally spunky tonight.

Hello,

I have been reading a lot on the boards referring to people having their 6.0L "tuned" and have a few ?'s regarding this proceedure...hoping someone can help shed some light on the subject.

Can anyone tell me what all is to be expected from the vehicle after having a "tune" on the 6.0L? Are any "bolt-on" mods necessary afterward? What about cost? Are any factory warranties voided when this is performed?

Thanks,

-John

You can expect better performance after a tune. And if you can keep your foot out of it you can also get better mileage. No bolt-ons are necessary.

Cost depends on who you go to. Wait4me performance has the best deal, $158 for a new pcm, and most are happy with them. Biggest complaint I hear about them is their customer service is not always too good. Nelsons and Westers are both rated very high by everyone that has them, but they're closer to $500. If you live close enough to one of them, they can also tune you vehicle in person.

I was gonna say get rid of those general americraps, but then I read you have 33's. If you went with Michelin ltx M/S instead of those fancy ones you wouldn't need stabilitrak in the rain

If you can keep your foot out of it after your tune, please give us a report on your fuel mileage on your trip back home. Let us know if the tune improves it any.

Should be interesting to hear results. What all is he changing. Does he drop that 4 second delay? I'm wondering if you drop that if it would hurt the gas miliage since that what is for. But hopefully you get more power and better gas miliage to boot thats what they all claim anyways....

Ok guys, i just got back from my trip to SA. First off I would like to say that I highly recommend Allen Nelson. It only took him about 20 minutes to perform the whole tune, then we took it for a test drive to make sure everything was performing correctly. I immediately noticed the truck shifts the way it should from the factory now. During normal driving it's still very smooth and civilized, but when you get in it it really grabs and goes. The truck just feels more powerful throughout the power band without a doubt, and it really seems to gotten a boost in the 3 to 4k rpm range. 2nd gear especially seems to pull wayyy more powerful, not to mention the truck dosen't stumble from the 2-3 shift. I must say the most impressive thing by far is the fuel milage. I personally wasn't expecting anything in this aspect at all. On the way to SA i averaged 14.7 mpg which is lower than the milage i was originally getting before the 33's, I also removed the front curb catcher which i believe took alittle bit off the mpg. On top of that i also had two take-off tire and wheels in the back which really smooth out the ride, and on the inside i had the backseat full of luggage. On the way back i averaged 16.8mpg and needless to say i was keeping my foot into it very heavily. I reset the dic mpg calculator and ran the last 100 miles of the trip with crusie set at 70mph and averaged 18mpg!!! I couldn't believe the increase in gas milage. I had ran the same route before the tirs, rims, and taking off the air dam and only got about 17mpg. Needless to say i'm very happy with how this tune turned out, the only problem i've ran across is somehow the speedlimiter didn't get removed  I'm gonna give allen a call tomorrow and see about getting rid of it. I must say if you're around SA and are thinking of getting a tune do yourself a favor and go visit Nelson Performance, i promise you won't regret the decision, not to mention allen is a real nice and informative guy.

Ed,

Do you still have active fuel management and variable valve timing after the tune? I was just wondering how hard it was for Allen to work around those two things. A tune is defintely on my "to do" list and AFM and VVT are the big changes in these new 6.0s.

Sounds like you got awesome results!!! You're makin me want to get a tune... The only problem is I dont wanna void the warrenty.

If you dont mind, (Im a complete newbie w/ tuning) what all does a nelson tune involve? New PCM? or is it a plug and play type thing....

Also if i did get one how hard would it be to switch back to factory settings if i needed to take it in to the dealer...

Great news.. Allen is the man.. Your tune will get better as more miles are put on the truck also.. takes a little bit for the computer to relearn some things..

Well how is the gas miliage around town? Still just wondering what exactly he changed and if you still had the 4 second delay as well as the active fuel management??

Not sure exactly what all he adjusted engine wise, but i know he fooled with the timing, I never really noticed the 4 second delay too much what really held the truck back was tq management and the granny slow shifts. before the tune when taking off the truck would pull hard in 2nd gear but as soon as the 3rd gear shift came it would lug down, now it just throws you back in the seat for some more fun. On a side note, I was doing some highway cruising at 55 mph with the cruise set and averaged 20.3 mpg, I could barely get my dad's denali "6.2, 6sp, 3.42 vs. 6.0, 4sp, 4.10' gears" to break into the 20mpg range, so apparently DOD is working. As far as around town i'm getting about 14.5-15mpg but i suppose that may go down a bit starting back at college next week sitting in traffic every morning, and yes the active fuel management is still functioning . I just couldnt be happier with it other than the speed limiter but maybe god is watching over me. On the other hand i think i may get it removed after all :withstupid:

Interesting ok so still kept the dod i would definatly want to keep that in place. Hmm thats pretty decent gas miliage for the big tires probably losing 1 or 2 mpg with those around town. Sounds like there definatly worth there money, more power and offset the costs with better gas miliage. If you dont mind me asking how much $$$ was it. Sounds like custom tunes run you about 400 500 bucks except for the wait4me one is more like 150 200... Just wondering if you got charged any more then normal being an 07 new model. Thanks Enjoy the tune sounds like fun....

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
