Just bought a 2002 GMC Sierra Ext cab Z71 SLT Flareside. Love the truck and want to start adding some goodies. I want to go for both performance and looks. What would recommend doing first?

Some more info would be great. My vote would be for a wait4me tune but if you will be getting a custom exhaust you should wait till tht gets done. If the tires on the truck now are bad I would have to vote for tires just because of the safety concern. I would start with the things that will make the truck run better (custom tune, exhaust, all fluids changed) and then worry about the cosmetic stuff. I also wouldn't bother with an intake. Most here including me thing it is a waste of money. If will make noise when you step on the gas but it won't help you go any faster. The stock intake is plenty unless you have lots on engine mods. Just put in a K&N drop in filter and call it good.

I voted for exhaust. I would add the exhaust and intake and the tires and then get the tune. The tune can accomodate for all of the others. Good luck!

I'm making similar decisions myself...I just bought a 2007 Sierra Z71 SLT crew cab with the 6.0 liter Vortec Max and I'm trying to figure out what to add to it. I'm very happy with it the way it is but I like doing the upgrades to get the extra performance and possibly the better fuel economy. I am somewhat concerned with voiding my warranty though with some of the upgrades like the tune and lifting.

Anyway- Hello to all you GM owners and thanks for a great informative site. As someone new to the 4X4 world, this site has been a wealth of information - and thats just reading not posting until now. :-)

Dude yeah I went for exhaust! Then I think that I would go for intake and I wouldnt get bfgs unless my tires were bad... And for that matter I wouldnt get bfg's either... But for some reason they have a good reason, I guess just a bad experience!

For performance add exhaust and a tune in that order.

For cosmetics, tint the front windows to match the rest, get rid of the dealer license plate frames and peal off the big 4X4 stickers (if you have them).

Since you asked though, I would say exhaust because not only do they sound good but they look better then stock and may or may not add horsepower. I would also recommend buying a cat-back system over a custom one, in my opinion it will generally be a better quality product in looks and performance.

Congratulations on the new truck by the way and hope you have good luck with it.

I would recommend getting an exhuast system first. That was my first mod and it was well worth it. If your tires you have right now are still good, just wait until you really need tires to change them. You could do the billet grille after, I probably will buy one soon. And then you should tint all the windows and then drop the intake. Well at least that's what I would do, but I really recommend getting an exhuast, I'm sure you won't regret getting it first.
