1500 Payload Observation

The short version is I went out last night and I picked up 1000lbs of soil and an additional hundred or so lbs of lava rock. I was kind of surprised to see my truck riding on the bump stops. From what I gather a 1500 reg cab Z85 has a payload capacity of about 1800lbs. Is it normal to use 2/3 of that and have the truck riding that low? I guess that's what they (the bump stops) are there for, but I’ve loaded what I thought was a considerable amount in there before, and didn't have the same result. Anyway, on the plus side, it took off and stopped almost like it was empty.

How was the load distributed? If too much is past the rear axel it will weigh your truck down lower than it should be.

Usually you can load up well beyond the stated capacity without a problem. I do it all the time with my truck and more so with trucks at work.

Oh, and Svensk, mulch weighs next to nothing. It's all air. I know, I'm a landscaper.

I dont know could be wrong but i dont think payload for 05 half ton would be 1800lb they bumped up the payload a bit with the new style struck but i thought old style were more around 1200-1400 range depending on specs....

I have a 2002 ext cab Sierra and I thought the payload capacity was 1400 pounds. I would think if you placed it right, you could load 1800 pounds without hitting the bump stops.

I have an 05 GMC crew Z71 and the payload is listed at 1701lbs. I have had a 1000lb. bag of sand and roughly 100 pavers in the bed at onetime and the pickup finally sat level. It was about and 1 1/2 away from the bump stops. Hauled like a dream. I have also had a yard and a half of mulch and it doesn't even squat.

I have had 2000 lbs (50x40lb bags of wood pellets) stacked in the front of the bed and not bottomed out--1600+ load capacity--drove and stopped fine. If I did this on a regular basis, I would have some sort of overload springs installed--or get a HD truck.

Sounds a bit odd to me to be riding on the bump stops with that much weight. I've gotten three yards of mulch a couple times and I wasn't on the bump stops. I was close, but there was still a little bit of room in there.

good point. I've got a toolbox on my truck so the load may have been further aft than optimal. In regard to the payload rating, I was going off the published capacity off of the Chevy site. I've hauled a fair amount of material (mulch, lumber, ect.) and haven't noticed this before.

anyway, thanks for the input.

I just did the same today after getting a yard of compost/loom mix. I was a little lazy and forgot to take my toolbox off, so the back was riding a little low. Luckily I wasn't driving far after picking it up... I got a little tilt back action

I just picked up about 900 pounds of mulch today, and I still had a good inch and a half before the bump stops. A few weeks ago I got about 1200 pounds of mulch and was pretty close to the bump stops.

what is with you guys are you crazy?!!

If im hauling and im not on the bumps something is wrong

18 sheets of 5/8 x12 sheets of rock is like a daily trip for my truck

Hell even then ill have studs and track on the racks + tools. Handles just fine if you are smart about how you drive

Two weeks ago I got a yard of river silt (has alot of clay in it) to fill in some low spots in the back yard. Truck was squatting pretty good, but not on the bump stops at all. Like everyone else has said, handling and braking was excellent. I didn't notice a braking difference at all, didn't go that far though.

I've put a 6.0l Vortec in the back of mine with a few tires under and around it for protection, some bungee chords, and my 230 lb buddy, it sat a little under level. It made me want to buy 2" drop shackles for the rear. When I had 500lbs of bags back there for the winter it sat pretty level.
