Changing From Ford To Gm

Recommended Posts

I am changing from a ford driver to a GM driver. I am looking at NBS Silverado LTZ's and NBS GMC SLT's...Crew Cab 4x4 in both. I would appreciate any pro's/con's, experiences, problems, likes/dislikes etc. on one vs. the other. I hope to get as much info as I can on the NBS trucks before my purchase. I like the looks of the GMC front end better but it seems there are more Silverado's available. Thanks in advance for the help.

Go with the 6.0L engine and 4.10 gears. You won't regret it. The 6.0L has VVT and gets about the same mileage as the 5.3 so it really makes the most sense unless your restricted by price tag. silverado vs gmc all comes down to personal preference. Neither has any clear advantages because they're the same trucks.

:chevrolet: Couldn't have said it better. You really can't go wrong with the Vortec max and 4.10's. You can pull down houses if need be. I haven't heard any major cons except some people don't like the way they look. I've been looking up trucks around here lately and can't find any Vortec maxes or SS's :driving:

I went from a 2003 F150 Extended Cab FX4 (5.4) to a 2004 GMC Sierra Z71. I have never looked back. I have the 5.3, and whatever gears it came with stock. I have more power to tow, get better gas mileage, the truck looks nicer, rides better ... yeah

You will not regret it. Sorry I can not give you any more pros or cons than "It is just a better truck".

Get the truck you want, do NOT settle for anything less. You will regret it for the length of time you own it. With that said, go to your dealer, and ORDER one, at invoice pricing + any incentives at time of delivery. That's what I did and I got invoice less $2K in rebates and 0% for 36/mo. (Back in Feb/March).

Get the 6.0!!! not much extra $$$, same mileage (virtually) and a MUCH better engine. Deep skirt Aluminum block with 6 bolt mains (4 main plus 2 crossbolts per cap) and VVT. Also, you get a HD rear end, HD tranny, ext engine and tranny cooling, and (with Crewcabs and ext cabs with Stabilitrak) you get 4 wheel disc brakes. No brainer if you ask me!!!!

Good luck!!!

PS If you are true Ford guy, and think you may be sorry you didn't wait for the new F150 when it comes out, you may want to wait a year and compare the GMs to the new F150. Not saying you should wait and buy a Ford, I am just saying you may want to comapre them before deciding, just so you can't second-guess your decision next year when it arrives. Just my .02.

I'm an ex-Ford guy who just bought a GMC NBS CC 4x4 SLT with the 5.3. I wish I'd gotton the 6.0 :chevrolet: . I was going to wait for the new F-150s but, the transmission in my old '02 FX4 Supercrew decided to take a dump for the second time and the electronics started acting up at 115k. :driving:

In conclusion, get the 6.0

Thanks for all the replies. I have a '05 4x4 Lariat SCREW and have not really been pleased with it. Only 38,000 miles and I already have electrical issues. New power window switches, transmissin sensors, check charging system lights keep coming on and FORD can't find the problem, etc... The GM I have found that I really like is a NBS Silverado 4x4 Crew Cab LTZ that is loaded out. It has the 6.0L but only 3.73 gears. I only tow my 19' bass boat so I think the 3.73 wil be fine and might get somewhat better fuel mileage than the 4.10 gears. If that is incorrect someone please tell me.

I think you will love the 6.0 and 3.73s. I have a 5.3 with 3.73s and love it but no machine has ever been made with enough horsepower!

6.0L and 3.73 will be more than enough to get 'r done! You will really love the new motor.

Depends on what kind of driving you do. The 4.10's will utilize V4 mode more on the highway, due to higher RPMs and therefore, more HP at any given speed. So highway mileage may be a little better with 4.10's (hard to beleive huh?). But aside from that 3.73's will provide better city mileage. V4 mode in my truck (see sig) rarely get's used unless decelerating or with cruise on a flat or decline highway. heck, I was cruising one day in V4 mode and switched on the AC....it switched to V8 mode!!! Also, V4 mode get's activated more in Tow-Haul mode, for similar reasons (higher shift points, less use of OD). Even towing my 3000# boat in T/H mode, I am able to keep it in V4 mode easier (on flat highways).

But I would get the 6.0 with 3.73's again since I don't drive much highway anyway. Plus I was able to get the 20" wheels, the NHT (Max trailering pkg with 4.10s) pkg cannot.

How much $$$??? What options?

I have been admiring your new truck. I really like that color but the one I found is Blue Granite Metallic. It is an LTZ and stickers at $45,020. 6.0L/Rear Entertainment System/Z71/Sunroof/3.73 Gears/Skid Plates/18" Wheels-Tires...pretty much decked out. Haven't began dickering with salesman yet but hope to knock quite a bit off sticker before I'm done. I am a real estate appraiser and have a pretty good mix of city and highway driving. I think the 3.73 gears will be better for me. It seems like almost all the GMC SLT trucks come with 4.10 gears.

Thanks, and for comparison, here is a link to more info (options) and more pics of my truck. They are very similar.

For reference, I paid invoice (I ordered it) at $38,929 and received $2K in rebates = $36,929 plus 0% financing for 36 months.

I've had my truck (LTZ Crew Cab, 4x4, 6.0L, 4.10s) since early March and have over 13K problem free miles now. Easily the best truck I've owned. My '03 has been extremely reliable especially considering how hard it gets used, but it doesn't come close in refinement to my '07 (quieter, smoother ride, better gas mileage, much nicer interior). These trucks are a home run. :chevrolet:

I'm another guy who owned Fords his entire life and finally switched to Chevy. Like so many, I'll never look back. I'm sure you'll love whatever truck you end up with.
