Disk Brakes For 3/4 And 1 Tons

this goes out to truly you 3/4 and 1 ton owners, I am a avid poster in the light duty because i only own a half ton 2003 sierra. I am one of the very unfortunate owners that have rear disk brakes, and I am going through pads like crazy.

I spoke to a tech at a dealer ship and he gave me the inside scoop that 2003 to 2004 GM started to replace drums on the rear with disk. Well apparently due to poor quality basically rotors were turning in way before the warrentee expired due to faulty design, road grime, lalala every excuse for the general just making crap and changing something that they do like they always do, changing things that dont need to be changed.

So with this... Are your rear disk brakes lasting longer because they are larger, and more quality made. Just hopefully some half ton junky won't swoop in on this LMAO :)

GM eliminated rear disc brakes due to the $$$ PRICE $$$ / COST SAVINGS of nearly $60 per axle. It had nothing to do with the reliability. Disc brakes will continue to be standard on 3/4 and 1 ton truck into the forseable future. In 2009 look for Rear wheel ABS with traction control / stabiltrak, similar to what is on the 1500 series trucks now, and standard on the crew cabs.

The 1500 series trucks are the top sellers, so figure $60 x 300,000 or so units and you get a nice cost savings.

Of my three 3/4 ton trucks I've had, 2000, 2001, and 2003, none of them ever had any rear disc brake issues.

BTW, the rear calipers on the 3/4 ton trucks are the SAME part# used on the FRONT of the 1500 series trucks...

NO issues, none. Rear pads last and last and last. My one regret is that last June I installed EBC rotors (slotted and dimpled) and pads......now it sounds like an airplane is chasing me when I brake hard. Delco stuff going back as soon as I can unload these.

I reciently replaced brakes on my 03 HD Pads and rotors all badly worn one warped, at 70 K dealer said this was normal and some mechanic friends tell me the same this truck is never worked. My old K20 truck has only been done once in 21 years. something doesn't seem right.

i have an 04 and my rotors have about 75% life left at 57k miles no warping and not much surface rust... on the other hand my ex g/f dad has an 03 avalanche and he replaced his at 75k due to the rotors being corroded and the pads low :) alot depends on salt these rotors can suck with salt but i have not experienced anyone having troubles with them in half tons and 3/4 tons (no 1 ton exp.)

I do agree with the cost issue, but still feel they just don't hold up to climate situations, thats why I was wondering if you guys have the exact same rear rotors and pads, or are they larger, better quality? The ones that came from the factory? Thats all I am asking. I have talked to a few people that have had my same problem with rotors completely shot and replacing pads like filters LOL.. thanks for the fast replies by the way guys.... and gals....

My 03 2500HD is coming on 96k miles and all is well, about 60% left, about 10k miles of this are towing my fifth wheel.

I have an intermittent low speed chirp from the front right, i'll have to clean it one of these days.

I do know that the 2500HD has the same brakes as the 3500. Some guys have reported 120k miles on their brakes.

Compared to my dads 1500 my calipers and disk are larger. He has 60k miles on his 2004 and all is well, at least he hasn't complained and I know i'd hear about it.

I have 125k on my truck with the original front brakes. I'd guess that I probably have 30-40% of the pad left up front too. I did have to replace my rears (disc brakes) right around 100k. Not sure why mine wore out, but it was metal on metal. My rotors were really bad so I put on Cyro Power Slots with Hawk pads. They have been really good so far, but I don't think they will last like the factory brakes!!

I only have 43k on mine, but I haven't had any problems with unusual wear or warpage. I back boat trailers in all summer and deal with salt and snow in the winter.

I borrowed my brothers '02 2500HD to tow a mini excavator and the back pads disinigrated under the weight. It also destroyed the rotors. The truck only had 25K miles on it (3 1/2 years old). The guy that owned the mini excavator has a '01 2500 and he said that he had to replace the rear pads at 27K miles.

My '04 was is the shop with 15K on it with the back rotors completely rusted solid. The pads were almost gone because of the rust. The dealer machined the rotors and replaced the pads under warranty.

We both drove our trucks mainly on the weekends, so if your truck sits alot, the rotors rust and destroy the brake pads.

2002 sierra extended cab 2500HD. I replaced all 4 sets of pads/rotors at about 75k miles (5 years). Pads still had some meat on them but the rotors were starting to fall apart due to the salty climate and all of the saltwater flooding we've had the past year or two. I never had a single problem with my rotors/pads even up until the day i changed them out. I purchased all OEM parts from the dealer and installed them myself. Even with the oversize tires I am running now braking is still smooth and strong.

My '01 2500HD 4x4 is still on original pads and rotors at 124,533 miles. Still have about 25% pad left on front, I will replace them this winter.
