4x4 Engagement

I have a 1996 K1500 pickup. Recently it is failing to engage the front axle when I push the button. The truck has about 140K miles on it.

The button just blinks. I checked the fuse panel on the left side of the dash and the fuse will "blow" when I push the button. This leads me to believe the contact is good on the switch which I hear is a problem in some cases.

I do use this truck off road in muddy conditions. I cleaned out the mud from the front differential area and inspected the connectors and wires leading to the acuator.

Next I thought about disconnecting the cable connector down near the acuator pressing the 4X4 engament and attaching a volt meter to it to determine if I was actually getting 12 volts to the actuator.

If I was, I would think I have a frozen acuator.

Any additional suggestions or comments ???

Additionally; sometimes when in 4 wheel drive and the tires slipping, I will hear some "banging" up front?
