Need Help Installing Jvc Radio In 2002 Chevy Suburban

Hi. I have spent hours using google to try to find answers to my questions, but could not. I hope someone here can help me. I want to install a JVC radio in my Suburban, but am having a few problems. First, I did order a wiring harness (70-1858 Metra 88-Up GM) that is a correct fit to the main set of wires coming out of my car. However, there is another set of wires coming out of the car that I think came from the cassete player that is not part of the main head unit. Do I just not worry about the extra set of wires from the cassette player? Also, do I just match up the corresponding colored wires from the wiring harness to those of the new radio and put electrical tape around them? What do I do with the ones that have no match? Finally, I read some posts on this forum regarding buying another wire that was necessary to retain the door chimes, etc. Will I need to buy that also? I appreciate any help that anyone can offer. I live in Germany and took my car to a German Opel dealer, but after failing to install the radio, they told me they would call me to come back when their expert would be there. They haven't called me yet and it's been a week. Smile.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Sincerely,

B.

Yes, you are right. They lead to the separate cassette or CD player. You won't have to worry about them.

Also, do I just match up the corresponding colored wires from the wiring harness to those of the new radio and put electrical tape around them?
Yes, but to be on the safe side, you should read the instructions that came with your wiring harness and head unit to make sure that the functions of each wire are the same. Sometimes manufacturers will go against the standard color codes.

On another note, I really don't recommend you just twist & tape the wires together. Use either solder and heat shrink tubing or good quality nylon butt connectors with a good quality crimping tool.

What do I do with the ones that have no match?
I usually just twist a wire nut onto the ends of unused wires, but you can use crimp caps, heat shrink tubing, or electrical tape.

Finally, I read some posts on this forum regarding buying another wire that was necessary to retain the door chimes, etc. Will I need to buy that also?
Nope, that only applies to 2003 and up. You lucked out by one year!

Hope this helps.

Kyle,

I just wanted to send a quick reply to thank you for answering my questions and making further suggestions. I plan to try to install the stereo tomorrow. Hopefully, all will go well and if not, you might hear from me again.

Thanks again,

Beth
