Tire Chains

Recommended Posts

I want to order a set of tire chains for my truck. I have the stock P265/70R17 tires. The best price I've found so far is $81 per set delivered from vulcantire.com. This is for the V-bar snow & ice chains. I want a decent pair for going off pavement this year.

Does anyone have any feedback or suggestions?

I am interested to hear what you finally decide. I have heard that it is good to have the diamond type chains to prevent sliding sideways (more applicable to slow speed or off-road special situations). The standard ladder type chains are not as good in that case.

I was hoping to find a good pair of chains that I could use for snow/ice as well as in off-road emergency conditions.

Vulcan's tire comparison table is interesting: Vulcan's chain comparison

Let us know what you decide.

Will do. I probably won't be getting these until after some credit card bills are paid (dam@ Christmas shopping!). The diamond-type chains are priced a bit higher than what I'd like to pay for a pair.

The Quik Grip RP would be my choice.

Good off road use, good in ice and snow, and hard to remove and install...that means harder to come off accidentally.

I recommend going with a commercial V-bar with cam-lock side rails, especially for off-roading. They have serious bite and will stand up well for the money.

When I bought my truck they made me sign a waiver that said that I wouldn't use metal snow chains, and if I did any damaged caused by chains wouldn't be covered. They said something about approved chains. Does anyone know about this? Where I live chains are sometimes legally required (4x4's have to HAVE them, if not use them).

This is a new one to me. I can't see why there would be any problems running a set for the rear tires, outside of not having them installed or tightened properly.
