Buying A New Sierra 1500

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm a rookie in this site. This is my first post; I've been doing some research for buying a GMC Sierra 1500. You guys look at the pictures attached and let me know what ya think, and how much should I make an offer. Right now GM is having a promotion for $2000 cash & $1000 for GM owner.

Thanks you in advance for your help!

WELCOME !

As stated here before by others.

Go to Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds and price this out.

As Consumer Reports states, start negotiating at the "invoice" price before any rebates/cashback.

Do do your homework first. This is not the last truck ever manufactured.

Looks great...my only word of caution is to think about the rear end gears. I bought in September and only briefly considered which ones to buy. Since then I've learned a lot about them and wish I had gone with 3.73 instead of 3.42. Turns out the higher gears can actually get better city mileage than the lower ones, and most of my driving is city driving. Of course it also helps for towing to have higher gears. It's not that big of a deal really, just something to think about. If the rest of the truck is exactly what you want, and the gears aren't that big of a deal to you then go for it.

I was looking at a very similarly equipped Texas Edition Silverado crew cab when I bought mine. The dealer would not negotiate enough on it, however, so I went to another dealer and bought what I really wanted. Non-Texas edition (did NOT want 20" wheels, mostly due to the cost of tires and also not a fan of huge wheels) and got the Z71 package instead (18" wheels, skid plates)....for slightly less money even! Bottom line, don't get emotionally attached to the truck just yet....drive it off the lot first. It turned out to be the best thing for me.

Thanks Unit, I've been doing all that

Thanks Slomo, I wouldn't have known about the rear gear, I'll keep that in mind. I haven't driven one yet. Still in the research/waiting mode, I'll pull the triger in the next couple of months.

Do extensive reading on this board about engine axle combinations.

There are many opinions on this. Keep an open mind. Get exactly what fits your requirements.

Gasoline is not going to come down in price unless we have a world wide recession.

Thats a nice looking truck. Might be a little hard to keep clean, but you cant really beat that color. It kind of sounds like your gonna be paying cash, so dont forget to knock a few thousand off before rebates kick in.

Haha, I wish I can pay that baby in cash. I wouldn't ask the bargain question if I can afford to pay cash. Yes, that's what i have in mind: knock a few thousand off. Can I start out with $30,000 before the promotion?

To give you an idea....I ended up paying $27,300 after TT&L on a truck with a list price of $32,800. I sent several emails to several local dealers with similar trucks and asked for their lowest price quote, that's all their was to it. At the time they were offering $3500 in factory rebates on 2007 models....so add maybe 500 to that price (because the rebates are around $3k now) and that's what you should be aiming for. It's a little more complicated than that, because there can be more or less wiggle room on each particular truck depending on the features, but overall this should help you get a ballpark figure.

I have found it easier to ONLY negotate on "out the door price" meaning, what I will pay after TT&L and all other fees. The dealers don't like negotating on that price as much because they cannot throw hidden fees in to the mix after you agree on a price.

As far as gears go. a 3:73 is a lower gear than a 3:42, the higher the gear the lower the number-3:42-3:32 etc, the lower a gear is the higher the the number 4:10-4:52 etc. as far as towing goes, I'd rather have a lower gear(higher number).

Sorry for the confusion, yes I also would prefer a "lower gear" then. 3.73 is what I would choose if I could do it over.

Keep in mind, with the 6.0 you get:

A better engine (6 bolt mains, deep skirt design, Variable Valve Timing).

HD 4L70E Tranny

Ext engine oil cooling

Ext Tranny cooling

HD Rear end

4 wheel disc brakes (as long as you get a Crewcab or Ext cab with Stabilitrak).

No brainer for only $1000 extra IMO. Mileage is only about 1 mpg less due to the 6.0 having VVT.

Well, towing is not an issue to me, cause I'm not gonna town anything except for my wife & 2 kids

Wow Slomo, you did great, that's almost $7000 off from the sticker. Man I'm excited now!

Thanks for yall inputs, please keep' em coming!

Thanks, but keep in mind that was a 2007 model and it was in late September...so they were likely anxious to move it. I have seen people on here get even better deals though, so any dealer is different depending on how close they are to meeting their quota for the month/year/whatever. Bottom line, if you live near a big city don't get stuck on one particular truck....there were at least 5-6 trucks within 30 minutes of me that were almost identical and I was emailing about all of them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, must be a different deal south of the border. Up here, its either a lower interest rate, or 2000 cash rebate. I agree with slomo, end of the month is your best time to deal. I went with end of the year and after rebates, before taxes, I managed to pick up my truck with a 35900 sticker price for 28500 plus getting the dealer to throw on mudflaps all the way around and swap in the aluminum rims. I went with the 5.3l with 3:42's in a 2wd. Im getting about 18.5 mpg (US) with 1600 miles on it. That of course is mostly highway, driving real nice. Can still lay a little rubber when i punch it, so im quite happy with how its set up. I think youll be quite happy with the setup you are looking at.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
