Rearview Mirror Indicator Lights

Recommended Posts

On my inside rearview mirror to the left and right of the OnStar buttons there are green indicator lights. I found out what the one on the left does in the owner's manual, but I can't find anything for the one on the right. Would someone please educate me as to it's function? The reason I'm asking is because this morning for about 15 minutes the light was illuminating red instead of green.

My OnStar subscription is still activated and current.

Usually, if it's green it means you have signal and can make and receive calls. If it's red, nothing will come in or go out. You may see this if you are out of range of a cell tower.

Thanks, I didn't even think of that. That would make the most sense.

Wow, I've never noticed it being red until a week or so ago. I did a search and you had the same problem at about the same time.

I haven't had OnStar since it expired shortly after I bought the truck.

It's good to know it wasn't something critical. Turning the key off and back on made the red turn green again. Strange...

This is not correct. You can cover the antenna with foil, You won't be able to connect but the light will still be green. A red light means there is an issue with the system. You can have an antenna code but that doesn't mean your out of range, it means the antenna circuit is not seeing the return voltage it would expect to see in a normal system. That's not the only reason but in anycase if the red light is on there is a problem withinn the vehicle. Also your vehicle doesn't really know if you have an account or not, It doesn't care the system still functions the same incase you call onstar and request an activate your vehicle needs to be functional for them to send the appropriate requests to the onstar module.

Great! So it's another intermittent problem due to cold weather, and probably associated with cracked solder joints? I'm getting tired of this BS...

Starting to sound like cold weather problems. So far this year during the coldest mornings I have experienced this issue and the engine hour gauge resetting itself.

REEElaaaax you don't even include anything as rudamentary as a code. It's like you got a cough so all of a sudden you have cancer.

Every manufacturer has these problems. GM didn't say lets make this stuff as complicated as can be, all manufacturers were happy as pie to build the most simple machines they could. The EPA came in and drove the technology, home pc's came along and people asked for things. If you are pi***ed about technology you are more than welcome to buy a nice old vehicle and get 5 miles a gallon and roll your windows up and down by hand.

Really every manufacturer does an amazing job in my opinion of getting the technology to work under the conditions that they have to work under. Take your home pc and put it under the vehicle, hit some huge potholes, drive in the rain and snow then run around the desert for a while, what are you going to get. :rollin: ........

Ok I'm done ranting for now. The question was what does the light mean, asked and answered. Now if you want to know specifically what the problem could be provide a code and we can work from there.

Where or how would I find the code for "Red LED in Rear View Mirror on RH side was green, now red"?

I don't have a scanner. Can you suggest one at a reasonable cost if I do need one?

I've had several solder related issues with parts in my truck. It doesn't get to live inside, so it has to go through temperature extremes, which is hard on electronics, especially solder joints.

I had issues with my 4x4 selector. I had the SERVICE 4WD message. Reflowed the solder, and seemed to fix it. The solder had hairline cracks around the pins.

I had issues with the temperature/compass display flashing and blinking. I reflowed the solder on the larger connector pins and haven't seen the problem since.

I received a letter from GM stating that the speedometer cluster may go completely inop some day. I read on here it was solder joints at the main connector. I will be reflowing that myself when the time comes.

I'm not PO'd about technology. It's what I do. I do have an old vehicle and it gets about 10mpg.

I would not be so stupid as to take my home PC around in the mud and stuff. However, there are PCs that are designed to do just that. And they live through it.

The question was asked, and the answer was "something is wrong with the system". You've asked me to provide a code, and I don't know how to retrieve that code. I'm asking for you help please.

Thanks!

Sorry I was having a bad day yesterday.

I don't have a scanner.

The same way you would find any other codes with a scanner. I do not know of a cheap one that can pull body control codes. Possibly the local autozone etc that will read codes for free, I don't know if they can read body control codes or not. But you said you don't have a subscription so if your not going to use it there shouldn't (shouldn't) have any effect on other systems.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
