Onstar Question

My wife's 2005 Saturn car has OnStar. To the right of little red emergency button is a light. It looks like it's off most of the time, but every now and then if flashes red. Does any one know why? We do not subscribe to OnStar, so I was thinking maybe that is why. On the OnStar website, it says if the light is red it means the system needs service, but I don't know if that means flashing red or solid red (or if it even matters). I called OnStar just to ask what it meant, and the lady made a big deal about something being wrong with her car and it needed to go to a GM dealer right away. I'm not so sure about that because there are no other lights or warnings lit up on the instrument cluster and the car runs fine. Plus with the website said the "system" needed service if it was red, not the "car" needed service.

 

Anyway, does anyone have any other info about OnStar?

The red light means there is a problem with the onstar system. The hardware in the vehicle doesn't care if you have a subscription or not. If you don't plan on getting one and using it I wouldn't worry about the light.

This happened to me a few times while I was subscribed, I called Onstar with the Blue button and soon as I connected the light turned green. I talked to a rep and told them the situation, they said everything was fine and the light turned green. Now that I stopped subscribing my light is still green.

Thanks. That's what I kind of thought, but since I have never dealt with OnStar (other than the free year it came with) I wan't sure. The ;ady on the phone was making such a big deal that something was wrong with the car. I was pretty confident that there wasn't and it was just the OnStar system.

 

She really wanted me to take the car to a service center as soon as I could.
