Is My 2008 1500 Gonna Clear These 305/55's With These Wheels?

Hello this is my first post on gm-trucks.com and i apologize for it being a newb question.

I have a set of 305/55/20's (33.2" x 12) that are going on my 08 1/2 ton 4wd.

I am looking at two sets of wheels, (dont know if either will matter)

1st are KMC Rockstars 20x8.5 (5.1 Backspace, and +10ish offset)

2nd are Moto Metal 951s. 20 x 9. NOT sure on backspace, but +18 or +30 offset (have choice)

Will EITHER of these setups allow me to run the 305/55s? The plan was to install a 2" rough country leveling kit in order to fit them but I am afraid I may need a full suspension lift for 33's! Thats crazy!

One reason I am avioding suspension lift is because the truck has 300 miles on it its entire warranty life left.

I already have the tires so I hope I can fit them!?

Yeah your probably gonna need to level it just to be safe. After getting my level kit put on my custom guy said I could probably fit 305/55/20's and be alright. My wheels are 20x9(can't remember backspacing). But one thing you should think about before buying is this...You have a warranty on you truck BUT the suspension is not covered. It's only the powertrain(engine/tranny). Most suspension lifts come with warranties from the manufacturer. So if you did get a suspension lift you would have your powertrain AND a suspension warranty. Just something to think about because after learning all this I'm getting a 6' suspension lift. The only way your powertrain would be voided by a suspension lift is if the dealer/mechanic could prove that the lift cause the problem. Search around on here and you will find this in the warranty laws. Hope all this helps!

Thank you and yes that does help. I have full intentions of lifting it to be safe. I was actually considering doing the new rough country 3" suspension lift, because it would only cost $500 bucks. extra 3" travel up front and 1.5" in the back. The only thing with that is if it DOES cause warranty problems of some sort I should just went 4" full out.

I was always planning on leveling it from the day I bought it so at minimun a 2" level is gonna go. If I can get the wheels to clear with just the level I think im just going to do that.

The reason I bought this truck is because my 03 Ram was total junk and I wanted a brand new truck under bumper to bumper warranty. I would be pissed if my diff or tranny failed whiles its under warranty and they denied me because of a lift, when all along the main reason for the new truck was the warranty.

I dont see how they could deny me because of it but It wouldnt suprise me if they would try.

Well I think of it like this....if lift kits voided warranties then why do dealers put them on trucks? The dealer I bought my truck from made everything sound as though if I didn't get them to install it then it would void the warranty. Which I knew was total BS! It was gonna cost like almost 300$ to have mine leveled at the dealer (install plus kit). I got mine done for 150$ total somewhere else.

Do you have any more pics of your 4" lift?

I don't, but what would you like to see. I can get some for you.

Mainly just a straight side view. I have been going back and forth between a leveling kit and a lift.

What Adam said, with all performance products they have to prove that either the product itself or the installation of the product caused the problem.

That's the story I've walked into my dealership with before.

I'll try to get some ASAP. Its dark out now and I'm going out of town for a couple of days for work. I'll see if I can sneak some time away from work for personal business

Wow. That looks really good. Do you mind if I ask how much the kit and install ran you? From what I've read on this site 305/55 20 usually fit with just a levelling kit. What made you decide to go with the lift? Thanks for the pictures and info. I appreciate it.

That lift looks really good with tires, I guess I'll still put the leveling kit on since I bought it but maybe when the weather breaks here I'll do that tuff country lift.

Looks like the perfect size lift for me.

The lift was installed by the dealer and worked into the price of the truck. I have no idea of price, sorry.

The dealer had two trucks, identical except for the after market accessories listed in my signature. Plus they screwed up on the pricing, they fogot the wheels and tires in the pricing. Which one would to take, stock or modified

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
