Tire Pressure Monitors For New Wheels And Tires?

I ordered new tires and wheels. I pretty much forgot about the tire pressure monitoring system in my 08 1500.

I assume that if I do not run the tire pressure monitors my truck will always flash the tire warning light??

Pretty much my two options are to tear down the stock wheels and tires and take the stock monitors out, or buy TPMs for the new wheels and tires.

What have you guys did? Where did you buy them if you bought new ones?

Haven't bought any new wheels but:

If you move the sensors, you will need to buy new valve stems, about $7-$8 each.

If you buy new sensors, you will fork out (I think) $75 each. And maybe new valve stems too.

Hmmmm.

If you bought low-pro wheels you may have to get the sensors reprogrammed for a higher pressure range.

I would probably take my old wheels down to the dealer with me and pay them to move them over and reprogram and relearn. You're going to end up there anyway before it is over.

I don't recall the sensors being that expensive... but it's quite possible. Just call around on price and fitment. That should help you determine if it's worth it to just buy new sensors or not. Any descent tire shop can normally order and install them for you. Sure would save you a lot of trouble.

If I were to buy new ones I will need valve stems no big deal, but will I need to have them calibrated or "relearned". I dont want to go to the dealership if possible (because of price gouging)

I had my new wheels and tires installed yesterday, it's painless assuming you are going to run a similar pressure in your new tires.

I bought my GM sensors brand new on Ebay, for $80 delivered (all 4 total). They installed them in my new wheels, activated them with thier handheld tool, did a re-learn and I drove off. Took them 5 minutes.

If you are running a much bigger tire and will require more air pressure than what was previously loaded into your DIC, then you will need to run by the dealer and have them hit your DIC with the new parameters, they will charge you to do it.

The relearn is really easy for the dealer/tire shops. I've seen the one discount tire uses. Only takes a minute and they're done. No need to bother the dealer for any of that stuff. I doubt discount tire would even charge you for the relearn, especially if you let them take care of the TPM stuff.

This is stupid I might just not run them at all. Its annoying to have to deal with this because I bought my wheels and tires online, not mounted and balanced. its already hard to get people to mount and balance tires for you that you didnt buy from them, now I am going to have to pay to get this crap done.

I think im just going w.o them. I dont need them anyway and I know my tire shop isnt going to know what to do, nor have the handheld tool.

I know but the thing is the chain tire place is probably 40 minutes away from me and I doubt that my tire guy. (small time guy in little town) probably doesnt have the capabilities but I am going to ask him. I think I am just gonna have him break down the stock tires and get the sensors out of there. They shouldnt need programmed then If he keeps them in their respective spots.

But wait what happens when you rotate tires??? If its programmed for left front and you move it to the rear?

just a simple re-learn, it is in your manual.

If you don't choose to install your sensors, you are going to have your dash lighting up when you start your truck.

Will the truck pass inspection with out the sensors?? I am either going to break down the factory wheels and take out those sensors or I am going to not run them.

I am wondering of the dealership will fail it for inspection w.o them. (free inspections for life so I'll prolly take it to the dealer)

The system will have to be programmed for the new sensors either by a dealership or your local tire center such as Discount Tire.

I have an '07 Denali XL. I ran aftermarket rims last summer w/out the sensor. Had to press any DIC button to remove DIC error message and then the amber exclamation light on the speedo was always on. I just had the dealer install TPM sensor last weekend. Out the door was $273. I believe the TPMs were about $50.00 ea. No more irritating messages or dash lights. To me, worth the money. From what I have read, the TMPs trigger a warning when one is a certain percentage different from the others. As far as I know, they were not programmed differently for increased pressure. I have them set at 40psi.

Well I put the wheels and tires on w.o the sensor and the warning light stays on constantly and also says check tire pressure monitor on the dash. I dont believe I have a reset but (no DIC) its an LT1. (i dont think they have the same setup, i didnt know about it until after I bought this one)

I believe that I have no way of turning it off, and the only thing thats bothersome about that is I cannot check the mileage. The warning comes on and stays on, so I have no idea how many miles are on it. Its not too big of a deal because I hardly drive this thing, well under 1,000 miles/month, but it would be nice to keep track of the mileage.

I might get it fixed sometime, but I duno if its really worth the hassle or not.
