New Wheels = Major Vibration Please Help!

I just installed a new set of 17x 8 Moto Metal wheels for the second time(Sent the first set back because we thought something was wrong with the wheels) Now the new set has the same issue.

When you apply the breaks you get a bad shutter almost lke the ABS system is trying to kick in. I have tried everything. Their are no clearance issues with the wheels at all.

Is their any way possible the TPS sensors that were sold to me are having

an effect on the ABS system Wheel speed sensor?

I have installed new wheels and tires on every truck I have had and never had a problem like this! If you put the stock wheels back on the problem goes away. Anyone have any ideas/ Please help I am at my wits end with this.

Thanks!

did you remove the clip from the wheel studs?

Obviously, it HAS to be in the wheels / tires.

Tires would be my guess. Most new wheels are well built and any variations are usually easily masked by balancing. Sounds like you have an out of round tire or maybe one with a belt issue. There just isn't any other logical answer. Have the tire store do a match balance on the tire and wheel combo. If they don't have the machinery to do that, go somewhere that does. It will show you where the problem is... and fix it if it isn't a bad tire.

did you remove the clip from the wheel studs?

I'll bet this is your problem. This question pops up here about every 6 weeks or so.

This is the second set of tires we have tried so tires are not the problem.

Keep in mind this is two diffrent sets of wheels and tires that have done it.

How is removing the clips on the whel studs going to help? You are speaking of the clips on the rear drums correct?

At this point I am willing to try anything!

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to reply.

Like stated above make sure all the metal clips are off of the rotors/drums. My truck had aftermarket wheels new and it pulsated. I took the clips off and problem solved.

Mike,

The drum retaining clips do not affect OEM wheels because the stud holes are chamfered on the back of the wheel allowing the clips to reside in that recess and not interfere with the normally flat fit of the wheel mounting surface with the hub/drum. Custom wheels are usually straight bored and since there are usually only 1 or 2 clips the wheel is not flat against the hub and that kicks one side of the wheel out a fraction of an inch which is causes a wobble.

If there were 6 clips it wouldn't matter as much but 6 weren't necessary to hold the drum on during assembly.

Remove the wheels and remove those clips because your truck is now not bouncing down an assembly line with no wheels to hold the drums on. :chevy:

Have you tried isolating an indivudual wheel/tire?

I would put a pair of stockers on the back with the new ones on the front and see if it clears up.

If it doesn't, then repeat the test with the other pair of new ones.

If it does, then swap the bad paid one at a time until you find the offending rim/tire.

(Of course, this won't work if you have 2 bad rims/tires on different axles.)

Hello all,

I had this same problem with some new wheels on my '08 GMC Sierra, and after reading this I removed those clips and problem solved!!! great advice!!

Anyway, the tire company where I bought the wheels added some kind of "donut-shape spacers" in the center off the drums/discs (back and front) to fill an empty space that's left with the aftermarket wheel, they said that it's just an extra fiting to make sure everything is tight and normal vibration won't loosen the wheels...

Something else they told me: If you still have that vibrating problem you may need to go to your dealer to get the rear brakes calibrated for a 20"+ wheel, since they where electronicaly set for the 17" OEM wheels. It's a really fast procedure, they just hook up their hanheld module to your truck computer and set the new codes, in and out, they said. I didn't had to do it, now the brakes feel fine but maybe you may need it...

Never heard of recalibrating the brakes - if you can do that, then it should work. Just try removing the clips like everyone else has said. It should work.

That is possibly refering to the tire pressure monitoring if the new pressure is more than 10 psi out of range of the old pressure.
