Holy Crap! That thing grenaded.

My first thought would be finding a good low mileage used unit at your local boneyard. Rebuilding that is going to be expensive.

Well you're basically gonna be replacing everything in there. Gears wear as a set, and also who knows what non visible damage has happened. This repair isn't one for an amateur either. Needs to be done by someone with experience. Pinion gear, crush sleeve, spider gears, pinon. and all the slack needs to be set correctly (backlash).

get a quote from a good shop.

Lost my G-80 on my 99 Z71 @ 89,000 miles. Really sucks huh. I spent $1600 to have a shop replace/rebuild it, and they put in the older generation Diff because they said they see alot of the newer G-80s (99+) crap out and hardly see any issues with the older gen. Sure hope GM has improved things and that I dont have the same problem on my 07

Several years should work... you need to figure out what ratio you have. Call Ira @ 1-800-426-5385 (m-F) once you know. He's in Texas and pretty knowledgeable on this stuff. Maybe he can point you at the right place.

Junks yards have 100's of those rears in good shape. That is your cheapest bet. 150 bucks here for one.

150 bucks would be amazing for that application here. They are probably more like 500 bucks around here.

Same thing happened to me on my 98, of course it didn't help that mine sat in a pond for three hours trying to pull it out, man, lessons learned suck sometimes. I got one out of a junkyard also that was in good shape for 175 bucks, good luck.

Spencer. what were you doing to grenade that axle?

If it were Me, I would find a complete rear axle,(axle shafts, backing plates etc.) from a GOOD boneyard. (Take rear cover off and inspect before purchase)

Swap your backing plates E brake cables etc. OH Yeah put new axle seals in.

iv been there i did the same on my 2000 sierra I got the carrier for a little over 500 from the dealer that my buddy works at put it all together myself wasn't to bad but i forgot one of the shims that goes in between the carrier and the housing so my test drive made a little hum, got home tore it apart again and it has not given me any problems. did you damage your pinion or the ends of the axles?

Wow... yet another Gov-lock bites the dust. I sure hope mine stays together! How where you driving when hat happened?

If it was me... I'd chose one of these options in each price catagory:

Under $300

1) If ring/pinion are toast, swap out another axle with the Gov-lock (IMO, last resort)

Under $600

2) Check ring/pinion, if fine get a Detriot TrueTrac or Detriot Locker, set it up (this might be more if you can't do it yourself)

3) If ring/pinion are toast, find an older 6-lug 14bsf and swap that in. (unfortunately a 8-lug 14bff would not be right for a 1500 pickup without modification to other parts)

Over $1000

4) If ring/pinion are toast, replace them and chose to install a new carrier in the current axle, ensuring that the bearing caps are still good.

Well over $1000

5) If ring/pinion are toast, call up a place like Solid Axle or Currie and have them build you a FF D60, yes overkill, but it won't happen ever again!
