Xm Upgrade Communication Wiring Harness

Recommended Posts

About a month ago I purchased a Nearly New 2008 LT2 Tahoe Loaded with everything you could possibly get but it didn't have OnStar nor did it have XM. I ordered The XM upgrade from the dealer to have them install it. Three hours later they called me to pick my vehicle up because they couldn't install it because I didn't have the communication wiring harness. I have The 6 disc changer Factory Head unit that is XM ready. I've been searching this whole forum along with other forums and I have yet to hear anything like this. Why would GM sell an upgrade if you can't upgrade? Please Help

Didn't know you could get a vehicle from GM without On Star, but On Star and XM and the stereo are all integrated somehow, but if it requires a harness just get the harness. otherwise just get a stand alone XM reciever or Sirius.

I do not want to get an XM reciever. I want to retain my Factory head unit . I did see somewhere on this site about XM direct. Its supposed to operate like the factory setup but without the factory antenna , because it has its own.

You probably don't need the upgrade unless you have a one-of-a-kind 08 Tahoe LT2 - the specs say that XM and OnStar are standard on the LT2 trim level. Ask your service guys to show you how OnStar and XM work...and then ask them why they were trying to sell you an upgrade when it wasn't needed.

Not necessarily....

You can order "XM Delete" for a $100 credit.

You can also order "On-Star Delete" for a $200 credit.

This is mainly reserved for fleet and rental-car company's.

If you want you can post your VIN and I can run a build sheet and check the RPO codes.

I thought maybe a fleet vehicle - with the delete, would that be why the upgrade can't be done? Also with the delete, does GM leave off the roof antenna - if so, I guess that's the real indicator both are missing. I've rented GM cars from Avis and they had XM - I guess not all are the same.

No,You "should" still be able to add XM even with the XM delete option.

I emphasize the word "should".....I've never run into this issue before with a GMT900 truck.

I've sold some XM upgrade kits for the '07 GMT900 trucks,But like you mentioned before it comes standard for '08 (Unless its deleted) so I haven't had anyone thats needed to add it to an '08.

And yes,If it has both XM & On-Star delete there will be no antenna.

Thanks guys , I did run the Vin number and the onstar and Xm was deleted. Turns out this was a fleet vehicle. But it still seems I should still be able to get Xm service with the upgrade. I ordered the kit myself and will do it myself to see whats really going on. If this turns out to be the case then I'll order the direct Xm from XM Fan.com. By the way I do not have the antenna posted on the top of my tahoe.

Hey guys , I finished the installation yesterday arround 2:30 that evening. The job was pretty simple. Turns out , the dealership lied to me about me not having a communication wiring harness. I asked a guy who works at a caddallic and GMC dealer why he thinks the guys at the chevy dealer would tell me this and he said; "GM tells the service departments not to install any customer electronics that is not plug and play only or which requires any cutting, drilling or modification. Since I had no antenna, I had to drill the holes myself. I used a 3/4 STEP DRILL BIT (looks like a cone) for the first hole . Then I measured from center of first hole to the center of the second hole 7/8 in. and then drilled 1/4 in. Be cautious because there is no room for error! I recommend any one who's installing a onstar/xm antenna DONT NOT USE A REGULAR DRILL BIT, because its easy to overdrill the hole and its hard to keep it straight. The hole needs to be perfect in order for the antenna to snap into place. The hardest part of this entire installation was that darn xm receiver bracket. You have to have baby hands to get those small screws in there.

Glad to hear you got it installed & working

And yes,You definetley want to use a "Unibit" drill bit for the installation of the antenna,I remember this from the ones I installed in a couple GMT800 trucks.

Does anyone know the specs of where to install the XM/OnStar Antenna? I am about to do this upgrade myself and want to know where to drill the holes for the antenna. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

They should give you a template on where to drill them.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
