After Market Exterior Mirrors

I was looking at getting the extending mirrors for my 2008 1500 Sierra, and found out it will be about $700.00, which includes installation and the computer reprogramming. That is fine, but it leads me to the question about after market mirrors. If I had some (the after market ones) installed, I assume that I would still have to take the truck into the GMC service department and get it reprogrammed, which accounts for an hour worth of labor. Even if I bought them and installed them, the truck still has to go in. Am I correct in this thinking? What does the reprogramming do anyway?

sorry not an answer just a comment------this is why i have an 84 with NO COMPUTER, i hate the fact that all these new vehicles you dont need wrenches or sockets just a laptop computer lol. ohh where did the good,old, and simple go?????????

The programming is for the new switches only. If you have power mirrors now, don't change the switches. That is what I did, my original switches work great.

I have an extra button in there now that doesn't work, it is for power fold and the extended mirrors do not fold.

I did the same. If you have the the heated, turn signal, dimming mirrors (with or without the power folding option), then your switches should work with the camper mirrors. If you don't mind doing the install yourself, you can pick the mirrors up for around $420 (that's 10% over cost, which most dealers will do if you ask). The installation isn't really that hard. I've had my door panels off twice, once for the chrome door handle install and once for the swap to camper mirrors. There is a thread on here somewhere that details the steps for installing mirrors on a GMT900.
