Front Squeaking When Steering

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I recently (last monday) started to hear a squeaking coming from underneath front when steering. Today it started to do it even if I steer just a bit.

Squeaking is intermitent with regular intervals, and the intervals shorten depending on the speed during steering.

I noticed it started after a long weekend of steering on idle to be able to maneuver in tights spots.

Any ideas ?

Thanks!

The squeaking got more intense even if I did no more than 20 miles since it started. Got an appointement next tuesday, but I need to do some mileage this weekend and would like to know if possible if I won't kill myself.

Can I lose a wheel or something ?

Groaning in the steering can occur in the rack if the fluid is getting old. Tough to diagnose a sound you can't hear but I don't think you risk a wheel falling off. You could try sucking the fluid out of the PS pump with a turkey baster and replace it. Do it once, drive around, do it a second time, drive around. Fresh fluid may make it go away.

Is the squeak different at different speeds? Could be wheel bearing if true. Could also be a dry tie rod.

Yes, squeaking has different delay at different speeds.

at 5mph: squeak---squeak---squeak---squeak---

at 10mph: squeak-squeak--squeak-squeak-

If it is changing with wheel speed, you might have a wheel bearing going bad. On my 01 Tahoe, one went out at 80K and I replaced them both. Only thing I can think of if the squeak changes with speed. You could try spraying some silicone on any bushings to see if it quiets down. One last thing, of you apply the brake, does it stop? If it does, it could be the brake pad.

Good luck.

It only slows down the delay, doesn't stop the sound if I brake.

Do you think I'm still good for like another 200 miles ? I'll get it checked this afternoon at a local shop even if I have an appointement at the dealership next tuesday

Does it squeak all the time or just when turning corners?

Started doing it only when turning corners, now it whenever I'm at slow speeds.

Just went to a shop close and the guy test drove it for a block or two and said it's the break pads. Which would make sense since I know they need to be changed very soon, but the fact that it started making the sound only when steering made me tought it was something else...

Oh well.

Welp, that was a mix of two different problems. Just before I had it fixed, it started clunking too. So a brake pad was faulty and a ball joint needed some lube. Happy there was no bad surprises there
