Mangled Riv-nut

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone -- I'm fairly new around here and haven't really posted anything yet. I bought my 2008 Silverado a couple months ago. Anyway, i'll post an intro in a bit.

As for my issue... I decided to get one of the smoke bug deflectors for my truck. While installing the rivnuts that I hate so much, the center one somehow binded, jamming the bolt inside and then the rivnut started spinning. In order to be able to get at anything useful, I had to drill off the head of the hex bolt on the rivnut install assembly to get the other part out of the way. Now I have a spinning rivnut with about an inch of thread sticking out of. Does anybody know the best way to address this? Before I got too frustrated and quit, i tried to see if there were any holes big enough to get the back end out of the hood assuming i grinded the rivnut down so that the back would fall out. I didn't really see anything, as it seems that space between the metal on the hood seems pretty much enclosed. My next consideration was to somehow afix the spinning rivnut to attempt to get the remaining part of the bolt out. Given the bolt was incredibly stuck in the first place, I'm not convinced i'll have any kind of good threads left if this was successful. Does anybody have some insight on this issue? Much appreciated.
