Hd 6.0 Cooling Fan Swap From Silverado Ss

Hey guys, not too long ago I drove a friends Silverado SS, I noticed it had quite a pep to its step compared to mine,I drive a 2500hd Sierra with the 6.0, I was thinking of finding the SS's electric cooling fans mounted on the radiator and swapping them for my sluggish belt fan, I hear quite a bit of power and fuel economy is gained back. I was wondering if anyone had any experience on this or any input, as far as I am aware, the cubic displacement is the same on both, same radiator size, all I would have to do is replace the fans and get the A/C relay adapter, and there should be some kind of switch to get the fans to come on after a certain temp, Im not sure what its called but I am aware of that, I am not doing this on my own I am getting proffessional help, but my biggest question is finding either a wrecked SS, or just simply where I can find its fans besides the dealership, im kind of afraid to ask their price, but Im sure its pretty insane, any input or help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

There are a couple of companies that make electric fans already in a kit for your truck. Flex-a-lite even makes one for a D-max. Try the Flex-a-lite site for some help. I think it would be easier and cheaper to get their fans than try to find/assemble a stock setup.

I have some experience with this mod. Reasons to do this mod IMHO.

#1. A/C on hot days in traffic is now cold.

#2. No more engine fan howl.

#3. Much cleaner look under hood.

#4. If you idle a lot in traffic and use A/C a lot, the A/C compressor will last much longer.

The power and fuel economy to me are only very slightly better.

I always like to do factory or better quality parts when modding, 90% of aftermarket parts are of less quality. So I bought factory fans and shroud as a complete assembly from ebay. Wish I had spent more

time researching this mod as I will be switching to a factory fan harness and tune PCM with EFI Live

to enable pin 33 to get fans to work with A/C high pressure as the factory does this. Most of the others

run the fans when the A/C compressor is engaged which I don't like for a couple of reasons I.E. no

need for fans to be on when the engine and/or it is cold out, also no need for fans to be on when

driving on the highway. I have just touched on this subject, and feel this is a worthwhile mod, but it should be copied as G.M. has it work. Not since the 80's has a car manufacture run the fans just because the A/C compressor is on, at least for the cars I have worked on. They run it from A/C high side pressure.

This is like most things in life the more you know the less you know.

So if you dont mind me asking how much did you pay for the O.E.M Fans and shroud? Ive tried looking for them on ebay for mine there is nothing, except the Flex A lite option, ive also heard the LS1 cooling fans would work, they have a slightly smaller radiator but I dont know. THanks for your help!

I would look for the 05 Tahoe fans, I am not a huge fan of the FlexaLite ones. You could probably find the Tahoe ones at a junk yard or ebay. I like having my PCM manage my fans rather than it go off of ambient temperatures. The PCM also can use the AC switch for better use when AC is on and off. If you want more info, I would be more than happy to post it up.

Just my $.02 really.
