Oil Question

Recommended Posts

I live in Texas and so it is really only cold for about 1/10 of the year haha and so I have a question on what oil I should use. I have a NBS Sierra with the 5.3 liter V8 and the manual states that I should use 5W-30 but on my first oil change that I got at a dealership they put a sticker on my windshield and it says that they used 10W-30. Which one should I use?

Stick with the 5W20. The manufacturer knows a lot more than the dealer... plus they probably just had a bunch of leftover 10w30 stickers

If you do a search there has been a lot of discussion on it.

You mean 5w30, right Jim?

And if I'm not mistaken, you can use either, but one is better suited for lower temperatures (can't remember which exactly, but there's a chart in my owners manual).

5w20 Winter use or 5w30 Summer use is what I've read. Depends on how cold the climate is where he lives I guess. I use 5w30 year round here but it isn't cold here. You have to realize that in a state that is 850 miles across and about 700 top to bottom, the climate is very different depending on what part of Texas you live in.

You will be fine if you stay with the 5W30 all year round. I switched over to synthetic a couple months ago, and even that I stayed with the 5W30.

Same here. And if it works for a Canadian, I think it should work anywhere in Texas.

Well there you go figuring again Dan.

I agree that 5w30 is perfectly OK year round. The owners manual does allow for 5w20 for Winter use. :D

Live in Central Texas and use 10w-30 year round. Local dealers here use 10w-30 and state 5w-30 is too thin for Texas heat!
