2-3 Upshift Non-clunk Noise

Hi All,

I'm going to take my truck back to the dealership for the fourth time for a noise in the transmission. The history goes like this...around the 4K mark, coming back from a 400 mile trip the transmission developed a bad, bad grind on the 2-3 upshift. They had it towed to the dealership and had to rebuild the transmission - the 3-4 clutch pack had burnt out. Got the truck back and there was still noise on the 2-3 upshift, so they replaced the transmission a few weeks later. After that the noise still seemed to be there, but was faint. A year later, the noise started flaring up again, and this time they replaced the yoke in the rear end...reduced the noise for a little bit, but still not gone. Partially due my lack of time, partially due to hoping it would go away I haven't been back since the yoke replacement this summer. I have narrowed noise down to the 2-3 upshift at ~1500rpm.

I found reference to a TSB, but can't find the contents: 08-07-30-015. This describes it as a 'flare', which is more accurate. Searching the boards I found reference to a clunk, but this doesn't sound like a clunk. The best way to describe it is the initial incident where the clutches were burnt out it sounded like when you miss a shift/grind the gears in a manual transmission. Now it is noticeable enough to be annoyed by it...it just doesn't sounds like one of those noises that are 'just there'...you can feel it in the floor even.

Any thoughts before I take it in? Anything I can or should point out to help them find the issue? Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks!

John

Hey John,

I found this post when doing a search and mine has done the same thing for a long time. It's not extreme as yours, but does exactly what the TSB states. I cant seem to find what to do to fix the 2-3 flare. Mine flares about 2300 and goes to 3000-3500. It's only on the 2-3 shift. Never downshifting, I have all 4 gears. One guy mentioned the MAF sensor might have dirty contacts. I cant believe your whole truck shakes, mine isnt that crazy, but enough to be embarrasing with the exhaust and not a smooth shift.

Andy, that is a very old thread you are responding to, I would start a new one to get your issue commented on. The "flare" issue was a problem with the 6sp trans if I recall correctly. I think you have the 4sp trans.
