firstrock Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hello all and very nice forum you have here! Has anyone installed a trans temp gauge in the dash cluster on an 05 Silverado? My question is this; can I just add the motor to the PC board (I assume the 4 holes are present for this motor as well as the traces), add the needle and gauge face and be done with it since my truck is pre wired for this gauge as I understand it? I have to replace all the stepper motors and I'd like to add this while I have the cluster out if it isn't too much trouble. Thanks! John
BuckFeverZ Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Yes, the tranny temp gauge is pre-wired. I've never heard of anyone doing it the way you are however. Usually people purchase another gauge cluster that already has the gauge on the cluster. Is the method your describing more cost effective? I'm interested in seeing the result.
MarkD Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Unless I am mistaken, the gauge cluster is a single unit instead of individual guages mounted to a frame.
firstrock Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 Unless I am mistaken, the gauge cluster is a single unit instead of individual guages mounted to a frame. Once the cluster is removed and disassembled, you have access to the printed circuit board where the stepper motors for the gauges are located. Since my truck came "pre wired" for the trans temp gauge(1500 and the1500HD clusters are the same sans the trans temp gauge) I'd assume that there will be a "blank" space on the PCB where the trans temp stepper motor should/would be. I think I can just solder the trans temp stepper in it's appropriate place on the PCB, add a gauge face and a needle and I think that would work. Just shooting this idea at you guys in the hopes someone can confirm or deny my assumptions. Thanks

I took the easy way out and purchased a new cluster. So you are on your own. Don Some of the guys on ebay who repair clusters and sell stepper motors can probably answer your questions.
cbxeric Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I bought a used cluster off ebay for my truck, 10 minute job to replace cluster, too much work any other way 4 me.
firstrock Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 I've got an email out to the guys on ebay about doing this. I'll post the reply when I get it. If my idea does not work then I will probably go with this: Interceptor OBD2 Scan Gauge
firstrock Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 The ebay guys said it will work but the cluster requires a program flash update to make the gauge work, bummer no PnP! On a side note, I contacted my dealer about programming the cluster after I replaced the stepper motors and added the trans temp gauge and they said GM has extended the mileage requirement from 70,000 to 100,000 miles for warranty claims for the bad gauges in the cluster. So, I am having the dealer replace my cluster and I may have them add the trans temp gauge then. Glad I called GM before ordering the new stepper motors!!! John
C & A s Dad Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Firstrock, I can appreciate what you are trying to do but I believe I would simply go with the Interceptor if I were in your shoes. Below is a picture of my Interceptor installed on my "A" Pillar.

Below is a picture of my Interceptor installed on my "A" Pillar. That's what I decided on doing. I really like the features of the Interceptor and no need for any more gauges! Thanks for the input! John
