Rear End Bangs And Jerks On Turns...

Hey everyone

Truck is a 2000 Sierra 1500 4wd, 3.73 OPEN diff.

Problems are while in 2wd

Today while doing a U turn i got a very noticeable jerk and bang. i wasn't sure what was going on, so i started driving very cautiously and didn't notice any noises or jerks until i had to turn again. from then on out every turn i took would bang and jerk...whether it was a 90* turn or a long sweeping turn it was obvious the rear diff did not want to let one tire spin faster then the other. i also get a lot of bangs and clunks when i go from drive to reverse.

Does it sound like i need to replace the entire carrier gear/diff? Im new to working on differentials, but not working on cars (done motor, cam and trans swaps on other vehicles, this one is stock). so any advice you can give me on things to look at when i pull off the cover, and if the guts can be changed out with out any specialty tools / knowledge

thanks

If it is a repeated bang, I think the spider gears are on there way out.

If it happens once or possibly twice, It could be a loose suspension part. (Loose leafe spring bolt, center pin broke, etc)
