Door Lock Tumbler

Recommended Posts

I bought a used 06 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It only has one keyed door lock on drivers side, yet my ignition key doesn't work in it. Got remote door unlock, but don't always want to rely on that.

Now how hard is the door lock tumbler or cylinder to remove? (Possibly fix it if broken)

I can get a new one and get it matched to the ignition key or can the old tumbler get a key fittted to it? but will it have to be removed from door?

Also they are not cheap so what is the best route?

Thanks

The hard part is learning to remove the door panel without damaging anything. I've seen door panels which were removed by someone who didn't know how to remove it and they "flap" loosely when opening/closing the door and don't stay attached to the door anymore.

Basically you need a factory service manual to learn where all the screws / fasteners are. And that is $$.

Sometimes there are "secret" ways of removing things which you would never know on your own. Stick a pin in a certain spot to release a handle, use a shop rag to remove a keeper holding on a window lever, etc. If you don't do this, things can be damaged.

Then once you get the door panel off, it is just simple mechanical ability to replace a door lock with a new one. There might be little clips holding on connecting rods and you would need to be able to look at the clip and figure out how to remove it without damaging it. Pry it off with force and it is toast! Remove it by releasing and sliding properly and it can be reused.

Anyway this is a cost thing. What will cost less?

I don't think a locksmith could make a key without you already having a key, but you might ask. This would be a locksmith with a separate little shop which says Locksmith on the sign - not where they make keys like at a hardware store.

Otherwise it will be a dealer thing. Maybe they could make or order the key to fit your door from your VIN number? (Probably least expensive route.)

Or order a new lock and keys.

Then being as you would have to buy a factory service manual, probably the same or less expensive to have the dealer install a new lock. Unless you plan to do your own maintenance and are going to buy a factory service manual set anyway.
