Swapping An Auto For Manual?

Recommended Posts

So I found another truck I want......

1500 std cab shorty w/4.8L Nicely dressed up, 4" lift but it's an auto. :fume:

What would be involved in swapping it for a manual?

-different computer for the engine?

-will it bolt up to the existing transfer case?

-are there holes ready to go in the floor boards for the 4x hi lo lever and the farm stick to poke thru or do I get to pull out the grinder?

-Spose it might be longer (manual tranny) pushing the tranny cross member back and wanting a shorter drive shaft for the back and longer on the front too....

I do have one other shorty lined up with the manual already in but it is a sport side. I don't think it has enough space for my schtuff. This one is bone stock. Perhaps finding a fleet side box is much easier!

The push buttom 4x4 would have to get removed too I guess but I can't think of a whole lot more..... rad perhaps with a different cooler system?

After finally getting back into shifting gears with both our current vehicles I don't want to go back. :D

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.

I think you would be better off getting the sport side and changing out the bed. I think swapping out the tranny and figuring out all that other stuff would be cool, but the bed would much easier.

+1 on the bed swap. you could swap the bed out in weekend but the tranny swap would take months. Also atta boy getting a manual dont see many of those.

I think you guys are right. Only thing is I have a thing for Charcoal grey which the auto truck is, almost a "mini-me" of my 2500HD sig pic.

Sport side is Pewter which is alright, just not my favorite. Hides the dust better though! I can't say if the tranny swap would take that long or not. If I get the ducks in a row before commiting it shouldn't be any worse than tearing out a lift kit. That is still fresh in my mind! :D

My 98 was special ordered with 5spd manual and I really missed that one. The 6spd manual with the 496 we just got is a riot and does better on fuel than our 6.0L auto. I won't be going back to an auto anytime soon.
