1996 Jimmy Front Axle Issues

Hello All,

Thanks for taking the time to help.

I purchased a 1996 GMC Jimmy for $400. It needed a intake manifold gasket and a catalytic converter. I fixed those problems. I was told everything else worked.

When I put the truck in 4WD (dash switch) the 4H light comes on and if moving I can feel the case clunk and engage. However, I have no power to the wheels.

I pulled the battery out, removed the tray and disconnected the cable going to the axle disconnect. I am able to pull the cable about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and it feels like it engages. If I spin the front tire by hand backwards the front driveshaft spins (sometimes) however, whenever I spin the tires forward I just hear grinding and the cable moves in and out at the same speed as the gear grinding.

Is there an adjustment I can do or is something FUBAR with the internals of the diff? I pulled the 3 bolts out of the cable mount on the side of the differential and pulled on it from there. Same thing, spins the front driveshaft in reverse with minimal grinding, but just grinds and bobs the cable in and out spinning tire forward.

Help, If I need a new diff I am selling the truck.

Thanks!
