2005 Equinox Starter Problems

I have a 2005 Equinox. Intermittently when i turn the key to start the engine, the engine will turn over but it will not fire. When you release the key, the starter will continue to crank like it's not done trying to get the motor to fire. On the 3rd attempt it will fire and run normal. I have no service lights alerting me that there is a problem, there is no consistency if the engine is warm or cold, the weather can be hot or cold, rain or dry, it doesn't seem to matter. Any suggestions? 55000 miles on odometer.
