How do you stop exhaust drone?

Recommended Posts

Well I love the sound and power from this DynoMax muffler I put on yesterday. BUT...I noticed on the way to work this morning that the drone inside the cab is awful. It's way too loud inside the cab. The wife is going to kill me when she rides with me next time. So I'm going to have to do something to tone it down inside a little bit.

What can I do? How do you tone down the exhaust drone on these trucks?

You could try installed a "X" pipe between the two banks ahead of the CATS. Size it about 1 to 2 sizes smaller than main pipes.

Go back to the OEM exhaust.

Yeah I guess that would work too if I wanted to loose this extra power and fuel economy I've picked up.

Looks like I just need to take it to an exhaust shop and let them work something up for me.

Quite honestly the power is more a state on mind than you think because if it was that easy to gain power and MPG they would come with different systems from the factory given current HP and MPG wars. A X pipe will not make it quieter but it will change the resonance problem. As far as MPG, if you did a real test up same condistion you would likely find city MPG has decreased not increased. With load moffler you are more awhere of your foot in throttle and may feather it more at time because of this and make it seem like MPG is better at times. One more thing stock exhaust system will last 10 or 15 years as it is made out of good metal and it kinda a silly to cut up a new truck like that still under warranty not to mention what it did to a otherwsie quiet ride.

Try this. Could be a cheap fix.

If you have an oval cross-section on your muffler, temporarily rotate the muffler 90 degrees so the flat sides point left and right instead of up and down. (Don't worry about fixing your pipes yet.) The noise from the muffler radiates mostly from the center of the flat sides of the muffler. Send that noise sideways (left and right) instead of up into the floor of your cab. Once you've rotated the muffler, drive it around for a few minutes and if the problem's fixed, have the pipes adjusted/bent so that the new orientation of the muffler works with the rest of the pipes.

Maybe but a X pipe will greatly change the frequency of it and the resonance.

That's a helpful idea. I wish I hadn't welded the muffler in place already :happysad: But that's an idea that's definitely worth trying. Would be a cheap fix if it worked. Thanks for the idea. You've already been more helpful than both muffler shops I went to yesterday. They just wanted to sell me a new muffler and that's "all they could come up with". yeah, ok.

I'll be darned if I don't learn something new here every day. I have seen brand-new rigs with OEM oval mufflers mounted "side-ways" and did not know why.

Now I know why... :happysad:

You could buy a heat shield Flow master sells them, this is what they suggest to help tone down a muffler. the other thing is But some dynamatt, Line the floor and back of the cab with it. the stuff is great for sound insulation. Summit racing Sells both items. Just my .02

Ignore the obvious, a X pipe will really alter the output frequecy per bank and change the resonance problems a lot. Shield and such are just bandaids to the problem and a X pipe is more of a cure.

Did you consider just putting dynomat under the carpet and in the door panels? A good heavy wrapping of dynomat on the interior will do wonders to silence all noises entering the cab. Almost any car audio shop can install it for you. Or do it yourself if you are up to it.

I had this problem with a Ddoge once, I got my muffler shop to put a glasspack in front of the Flowmaster 40 and it took away the drone and didn't affect the flow or performance. Just made it tolerable to drive.

Just MHO

Try our exhaust tip "Zoomers Cannon Tip" many guys on www.TitanTalk.com a Nissan Titan Forum have used our tip with many different aftermarket mufflers like yours and they all swear that it kills the drone.. $130.00 with free shipping.
