Creaky Door Hinges?? How to Fix?

Recommended Posts

I am finally buying a 2001 Tahoe... But in my search I noticed the majority of them all had Creaky Door hinges when opening or closing.. WTF??

Even the one I am buying has it a little.. Is it a worn bushing or is it just lack of grease?

white lithium grease worked for me!

Hmmm, so it must be a common problem. Oh well, I already have the Lithium Grease so I am all set for her to come home... :loser:

MY '98 has been driving me nuts for years till I found the solution.........RUST CHECK IN A SPRAY CAN, yup the stuff works like crazy, makes all 3 of my doors feel velvety smooth and the best part QUIET. It's been mint for the last two months now. Works great in door locks as well. Try it........you'll like it!

There is a small bearing /roller just inside the door, that the small shaft rides on. try to get in there and lub it. I have used just regular oil in the past.

Is the roller on the side edge of the shaft? Almost all 4 of mine look like the metal is shaved from scraping.. I assume this little roller is frozen with rust..

Can I access it with the door panel off?

Anyone have picture?

The OEM door checks were metal, which rusted no matter what you put on them. The new checks have a plastic coating on them. Had them replaced on my 01 under warranty. The service manager looked it up in the GM service computer under hinge noise. It listed the fix along with the new part numbers. When at the dealer look at a new truck and you will see them as OEM.

Can I assume the "door Checks" are the little flat metal shaft?

My 02 Escalade has the same problem with the metal on metal shaft scraping. It is particularly bad on the rear passenger side door. It also looks like the door is slightly out or alighnment. Lower towards the rear. I'm hoping I can adjust it up. No amount of any lubrication has mad any difference. The door hinge is definatly rubbing on something as it is opened and closed. Dealership has no clue how to fix.

Chuck,

Yep, thats what the service manager called them. They are flat metal bars, scalloped on one side, which rides against roller bearings inside the door. This setup hold the door open at the midway and open postion. The new ones are identical metal base, but with a plastic coating. Door's (rear) now work better than ever. They used to groan, creak and hangup prior to the swap out.

If the service manager has the name wrong, I would not be suprised. He wanted to make sure I wasn't talking about the hinges. He didn't like my "flat metal, now rusted, bars that insert into the door, midway between the hinge height.

Hope this helps.

I had the problem till one day I stuck the WD-40 tube inside the door where the little metal bar goes in. I think there is a little rubber boot to get past. Not sure what the heck I sprayed but it sure made the difference! Before I did that the noise put chills down my spine!!

Are these easily replaced? I hope you don't have to pull the door off the hinges to fix this.. do you??

Got a part # for the replacement part? price?

Chuckster-

Had the fix done under warranty, no charge. I'll go through the old repair invoices at home and see if I can get you some part numbers.

I believe the part is pinned at both ends. The exposed side is easy, I think the door panel needs to come off to expose the pin anchored inside the door itself. Still should not be too bad.
