Decided on the exhaust

I've heard a LOT of negative stuff about flowmaster exhaust. I put a flowmaster dual 50's on the grand am and it sounds great. Seems that it has lost alittle low end, etc.

I went with magnaflow on my ZR2 and loved it. Low deep grumble @ idle, no drone and sounded perfect perfect perfect.

I know the 6.0 is loud. I am going to go with magnaflow on the hd since I liked the results I had with the ZR2. I was told that they come in different sizes?

I dont want a whole lot of drone in the cab @ hwy speeds---60-80mph, a little bit is fine, but nothing that I have to yell over. I want to be able to have a conversation at a normal volume level of voice.

I do however want the nice deep low grumble @ idle, good sound when you get on the gas and it sound deep and strong when you get on it.

Steer me in the right direction as to what I need to tell the shop that I want. A guy at work told me an X pipe with dual mufflers, ran dual out the back would be great?

Thanks for any assistance.

I'm considering a new muffler on my truck...

Flowmaster 70 series is high on my list, but they don't have a muffler that I can use with the stock tailpipe that is a direct fit unless it's necked down a little. I want to replace just the muffler and I'll need a dual in - dual out muffler to do the job.

Magnaflow has a muffler that can be swapped in place of my stocker, but I'm concerned about the noise level.

I've heard the 70 series from Flowmaster, and like the mellow sound (unless romped on).

I tow occaisionally and haul my family with me and I don't want to overwhelm everyone with too much cab resonance.

My last system I installed was a cat-back Borla that sounded great until I towed... ('97 F250, 5.4L)

Mighty HD, I think you'd like either the 18" or the 22" Magnaflow. I have the 22" on my '00 Sierra (4.8L) and it essentially fits with the description you gave: nice, low rumble at idle, great powerful sound under acceleration and virtually no drone on the highway. The 18" will be a little louder than the 22".

I took TarheelZ advice, and many others in the GM-Trucks site. I am having a 22" Magnaflow put on next Thursday with custom bent pipes. The owner of the muffler shop has an in-law with same setup I have and WOW, what a different truck! Very little noise in the cab, it sounds great, and not obnoxious outside, just TOUGH.

Why not a full Magnaflow system? The shop uses different bends for higher output (Magnaflow and Flowmaster want his bending calculations) and the pipe is a heavier gauge, and all seems are mig welded.

I can't wait. I will post my opinion and pictures when it's done.

Does anyone have a sound clip of the 22" magnaflow?

Is it a single muffler with dual in/dual out, or do I need to get two of them?

I was planning to run duals out the back, unless anyone has any other good ideas?

I've never heard of spintech or ravin, or even heard them on any vehicle. I'll probally stick with the higher price and go with magnaflow.

What's everyone paying for the duals ran? My ZR2 costed $300 with the muffler cat back, ran dual with stainless steel tips.

Thanks for the help!

Alex, I think you can probably just do a muffler swap with the stock muffler for $150 to $200 and you'd like the improvement. If money were no object, replacing your existing cat-back with two Magnaflows, a crossover pipe (X or H), dual pipes and nice stainless steel tips would be a great system!

Good luck!

I am getting mine done for $250. I will not have dual tips, but after seeing the pics in another post I am re-thinking my setup. ( NEW EXHAUST SETUP COMPLETE...WITH PICS!!!) This setup looks good. When talking to the guy at my shop he mentioned that Magnaflow has a muffler with a bult in X pipe. If I go the dual setup maybe I would look into this.

That's a great solution! I'd forgotten that Magnaflow offered that...probably sounds killer with the 6.0L GenIII.

I just spoke with him this morning and he's putting one on a 2500 Yukon XL this afternoon. I am stopping at the shop after work to check it out. Maybe my plans will change when I hear that setup.

catiaeng, if you can, find out the part number for that muffler. I am thinking about installing a MagnaFlow myself. I was just sitting here trying to find a x-pipe and two mufflers..........but this may be something to consider.

Skipped lunch and when to the shop. Here's the scoop.

Magnaflow #14468 has a built in X-Pipe (2.5in and 2.5 out) they call it Thu X-__something.

Truck is a 2002 Yukon XL 2600 w/ 6.0L. Muffler shop custom bent the pipes, and put the exits on each side of the rear behind the tires with a 15deg slash cut SS tip. In the past three or four days I have learned lots about exhaust and mufflers. I was surprised with the sound. It was deep and not too loud. The guy at the shop revved the engine and it was a nice rumble at 2500rpm. It sounded deep like a flowmaster and the other magnaflow I test drove, but not as loud. And this was a smaller muffler than the #14579 I am putting in. I took the MP3 player/recorder along but the sound is really bad.

My thoughts, the smaller pipe (2.5 in and out) may have something to do with the sound, but again I am no expert. It sounded very nice, and fits the SUV, it was good deep tone, not obnoxious, and will probably be very nice with the family on the highway. And, I do not know if the 6.0L in the Yukon is different than the 6.0L in the HD trucks, if they are, it may cause a difference. He has an Explorer on the hoist now getting the same thing.

SO we are not comparing Apples to Apples!

Having said that... Next week I am getting the Magnaflow 14579 installed, new custom pipes and a single 15deg slash SS tip behind the right rear wheel. I just like the sound of it coming out of one pipe, with constant tone. It’s a personal preference.

When I get it done, I will try to get sound and pictures.
