TSB for Transmission "slip"

I have a GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.0l gas, and I have randomly experienced a slight slip when starting from a stop. It seems like the transmission forgets that it is suppose to enguage for about 1 second, then it goes fine. This occurs randomly and not often enough that I think it is a serious problem(maybe 1-2 thime a month). I have heard from others that there is a TSB out for this problem. The fix is a simple reprogram of the PCM to fix it. Does anybody have the number I can take it to my dealer so I do not have to deal with fighting them to find the fix.

Thanks!!

4L60-E/4L65-E Automatic Transmission Second Gear Start, Lack/Loss of Power When Accelerating from a Stop (Reprogram Powertrain Control Module (PCM)) #05-07-30-013 - (May 9, 2005)

2004-2005 Cadillac Escalade

2004-2005 Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2004-2005 GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon

2004-2005 HUMMER H2

with 4L60-E (RPO M30) or 4L65-E (RPO M32) Automatic Transmission

Condition

Some customers may comment on a slip on launch, low power on a launch or a second gear start when accelerating from a stop.

This condition is usually very intermittent, occurring only once in a few thousand miles of driving.

A Tech 2 or VDR snapshot of the event may show 2nd gear being commanded for approximately two seconds, then 1st gear commanded as would be expected.

Cause

This condition may be caused by an intermittent VSS signal, which causes the PCM to command second gear.

Important: There are other conditions that can cause the transmission to start in a gear higher than first. The following are a few of these conditions.

• Some DTCs can cause the transmission to start in a higher gear. Check for the presence of DTCs and repair as appropriate before proceeding.

• Debris on top of the spacer plate or in the valve body or a leaking shift solenoid can cause a 4L60-E or 4L65-E transmission to start in a gear higher than first. A start in a higher gear caused by any of these conditions typically occurs with much greater frequency. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-07-30-036D or newer for diagnostic information of these conditions.

• Placing the shift lever in the D2 position will cause a 4L60-E or 4L65-E transmission to start in second gear.

Correction

Important:

• This bulletin ONLY applies to 2004-2005 models year vehicles listed above.

• Some DTCs can cause the transmission to start in a higher gear. Check for the presence of DTCs and repair as appropriate before proceeding.

Using a scan tool, check for the presence of DTCs. If DTCs are present, refer to the appropriate SI Document before proceeding with this calibration.

Important: These calibrations also contain the 2-3 shift clunk calibration as detailed in bulletin 05-07-30-012.

Technicians are to reprogram the PCM with an updated software calibration. This new service calibration was released with TIS satellite data update version 5 or later available May 1, 2005. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) in Vehicle Control Systems in the appropriate SI Document.

Just a wild question...anyone know why they chose that when you put the shifter into "2" ...it stays in 2 no matter what?

On my old 96 S10 (same 4l60E)...when i'd put it in 2, it would start in first, then shift to second, then hold there, etc... almost like a limiter.

For my advantage, the start in second is good for non-neck breaking starts like in snow...because my 4.3L with the 3:08's in unbelievably fast in 1st...no s**tting.

The bulletin lists 4L60's but I assume it applies to 4L80's as well?

The information is specific to whatever models, years, equipment it lists. So no, this TSB does not apply to 4L80E.

I had a 2002 Z71 4L60E that did what the bulletin describes. Would occasionally start out in 2nd, maybe one takeoff out of 100.

Now I have a 2005 2500HD with the 4L80E. I have never noticed it do the same thing (start in 2nd) but I have had a suspicion once or twice that it slipped while taking off. Problem was, it could have been tire slip while crossing the white stripes that define the crosswalk at the intersection. It's about that quick of a slip.

I was bummed when I bought my 2002 and found out the 2 means 2, instead of the old way when 2 meant 1, then 2.

I'd rather have 1 then 2. I even liked the stiff 1-2 shift. Alas, it's been dumbed down, like so much other stuff.

I too have experienced this maybe 3 or 4 times in the 25K miles I have on my truck. Tire spin on the white line at take off is exactly what it feels like, and yes, it is very quick. This is on the 4L80E tranny.

So what do I do to get the TSB addessed? is this something that would be covered under warranty on a 2005 with 15k miles?

My 2002 2500HD does it also, just like the TSB describes but it is a 4L80E. It has done it since brand new in bone stock form. I never bothered mentioning it to the dealer because it happens so infrequently; there is no way it would occur if they test drove it. :D

I have an '02 1500HD (which trans do I have?) and it feels exactly as someone described, like spinning the tires on the white stripe. Scares the crap outta me every time, thinking its going to leave stranded one day.....is it a very serious issue?
