Vibration at Interstate Speeds
s10dragracer888 replied to UFCHEME's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
After changing tires, I ended up having a nasty vibration… But even before, I did notice a vibration at about 70 mph. What ultimately fixed it was a set of good quality tires, paired with a different set of rear shackles to raise the rear end… Ultimately changing the pinion angle. That may be where the problem lies with these trucks… Because I've noticed that a lot of of them don't have shims between the rear axle and the leaf springs. -
The only thing I did was the struts upfront, and it rides fine. No swaybar links necessary, no CV axles needed… Just transfer the top part of your strut, and bolt it back up to the truck. No issues. Additionally, I’ve done a little bit of offloading myself… Haven’t had anything break.

Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options
s10dragracer888 replied to s10dragracer888's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
I may still do a differential cover, just for extra protective measures… The terrain I’m going over is really rough, I’m even going with shock skid plates. If I lose the plate while sliding over a rock, I have plenty of strapping to replace what came off… That’s why I’m not too terribly worried about it. I’m just trying to protect the differential as much as possible. Unfortunately, they don’t make brackets for the SU8, and I wish they had. I could probably modify these, but it would take quite a bit of time, and I’m not sure that I want to go through all that. I’d rather just use the plumbing strap, and double or triple up on it to make sure it stays on the truck. -
Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options

I have to disagree, only because I have shattered a couple of differentials and wish I had installed a skid plate to protect them… I’m doing some over landing this summer on an expeditionary camping trip… And I’m just trying to protect my $50,000 investment. $400 for a skid plate is a lot better than $1500 plus for a new axle assembly. I really really don’t wanna have to go that far. I appreciate your opinion, but I don’t agree. -
Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options
s10dragracer888 replied to s10dragracer888's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
It did. Problem is, the brackets don’t fit the SU8 diff. It’s a different shape, but the dimensions are all the same. If the U-bolts were about an inch longer and the bracket was a different shape, it would fit perfectly. I think I might take some time and double up on the straps to ensure a good, sturdy system. -
Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options
s10dragracer888 replied to s10dragracer888's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
So, I did some modifying. Used pipe straps to hang it and foam under the strapping and the plate to insulate it against rattle. It fits. No cutting or modifying necessary. -
I used a 1” shackle with urethane bushings and grease fittings for a level look. I love it. The new Falken Wildpeaks ride better than the duratracs I had on the last one from factory.

Hey boss, just wanted you know I recently did this with my 2024 w/t 1500. If you use a 1” shackle in the rear with trail boss struts up front, it sits level. I’ll send comparison photos. Also keep in mind, I went from 255/70R17 tires to a new set of wheels and 275/70R18’s to match the ZR2. the factory ranchos are super spongy and a lot like the shocks that came on the Silverados that didn’t have special packages. I had a set that wore out completely at 25,000 miles. Skip the ranchos and get the Bilsteins. You’ll save money and get a better, longer lasting product. the 2” lift also comes with CV axles. YOU DO NOT NEED THESE if and ONLY IF you are just going with the 2” lift. If you go any higher in the front, you need the CV’s AND upgraded upper control arms. PLEASE keep in mind, I swapped the grille, added the side step bars, rear fender liners, removed the air deflector on the bottom of the front bumper, and downgraded license plates to avoid paying the government more money than they absolutely have to have…..but I promise it’s the same truck. There is more than a year’s difference between these two photos.

Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options
s10dragracer888 replied to s10dragracer888's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
I went ahead and ordered the AEV plate. I’m going to do some modifying to the plate and the differential this weekend to get it to fit, and I’ll get back to you. Stay tuned. -
Help! GM SU8 9.5” Skid Plate Options
s10dragracer888 posted a topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
Hello all, I’ve looked high and low for options. I have a 2024 Silverado 1500 Crew cab, 4x4. It’s got the SU8 differential. AEV makes an SU7 skid plate, but nothing is offered anywhere for the GMCH SU8 9.5”. What are my options? Has anyone modified the AEV shield? I’m doing some overlanding this summer and I’m just trying to protect my investment. -
The one that replaces the front from the bumper to the fist crossmember is 86803306 if you want factory. About $140 plus shipping is the lowest price I’ve seen.
-
86803306 will fit if the original plastic one is 84125967. 86803306 is aluminum or steel I believe. The one @asilverblazer posted was for a previous generation (2011-2019 2500/3500) truck; K2 I believe. The one I posted fits a T1, 2019-current.

2027 Which 2027 engine will you choose?
s10dragracer888 replied to Zane's topic in Gen VI Small Block V8 (5.7L & 6.6L)
You know, engine reliability issues can be mitigated with better internals and the removal of AFM/DFM/DOD, but I do understand that not everyone can afford that. You can get it machined to be a much better engine, but the fact that you have to tear it down to bare bones to fix all of GM’s blatant ignorance and catastrophic cost cutting crap is a huge problem. My other concern is what kind of transmission will be behind these engines. The 6L- and 8L- transmissions were both largely unreliable and very problematic, because just like prior transmissions, their design changed from ZF’s reliable design to GM’s cost-saving junk. Paired with the reliability issues of the 10 speed and the debacle of the valve body (thanks, NextGen for a PROPER FIX), I’m very skeptical as to the reliability of the new generation drivetrains, engines AND transmissions. This behavior from GM and lack of action on GM’s part in regard to finding a real remedy has me wondering if going to an older Toyota would be a better investment. I love my Chevrolet trucks, and I always have, but with the bean counters in charge and engineers being ignored, it is disappointing to see that this may continue to be a problem. It seems like GM and their effort to be penny wise and dollar foolish will be their demise. This practice of cost-cutting and cheaping out has steadily kicked them in the can since they changed ZF’s original transmission designs commissioned in the late 80’s for use in the early 90’s mid and full size pickups, sedans, coupes, and fleet vehicles. I truly feel that the fall of GM’s empire is inevitable at this point. It’s only a matter of time. It’s a repeat of history, and we are well on the way. -
I like that idea, I am also trying to stay factory where I can if it’s an improvement. I know, this doesn’t apply with engine or trans internals though I will say, I’ve been giving the differential skid a long, hard look, too. I’ll be doing a little overlanding this summer on my camping trip, so I’m just doing what I can to protect my investment. It looks like a front bumper and grille will swap to any trim from ZR2, although I may be mistaken.

Yes, I believe so. 86803306 is the plate I was referring to that replaces the plastic plate behind the bumper that bolts to the bottom of the rad support and the crossmember where the steering gear bolts up. See photo above.

*SEE BELOW FOR UPDATE* So, after hunting on the internet with a rhetorical shotgun for skid plates, I decided to do some research into OE parts. Here is what I found. for the metal skid plate (splash guard) from the bumper to the first crossmember, the part number is 86803306. Can confirm through ACDelco’s website that it is metal. I’m not sure what kind. When shopping through GM dealers, DO NOT INPUT YOUR VIN. I’m currently battling it out with Chevy Parts Pros and told them to pound sand if they won’t send me my part. Does NOT FIT DURAMAX OR 2.7L MODELS UNLESS YOUR ORIGINAL PLATE IS p/n 84125967. This plate is factory on vehicles with “enhanced tow”. for the steering gear plate, part number is 23385004. It is 1/8” steel, I believe. for the transfer case, part number is 84699480. This shield spans the gap between the trans crossmember, and another behind the transfer case, uses (4) m8 x 1.25 x34mm bolts and u-nuts to secure into place. Fits 2019-2025 models, 4x4 only. It’s powdercoated 1/8” steel. you can get the steering gear shield and the transfer case shield in a set through GM accessories under “off-road skid plates set”, but I found it cheaper to order some off-brand bolts/u-nuts and get the parts individually. cheers! ******************************************** My parts finally arrived. 86803306 does in fact fit in place of the plastic shield, and is made of the same material as the trail boss skid right behind it covering the steering gear. I do believe it’s either aluminum or mild steel. I took the air deflector off the bottom of the bumper to mimic a trail boss. The plate bolted right up and I had zero issues with install. Took 10 minutes with a ratchet, extension, and socket.

Center Console Downgrade
s10dragracer888 replied to Bugzi1776's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
The 2500 didn’t change body styles to follow the T1 until 2020. Unfortunately that means the console will not fit. I have a refresh truck (2024) but it’s a WT trim, and it follows the interior design of the 2019-2021 1500 T1 trucks.- 5 replies

Hey guys. i plan on doing a bit of overlanding this summer and fall in my 2024 5.3 crew cab during my camping trips in the Shenandoahs out here in Virginia. I’m getting a matching set of five 275/70R18 tires (stock size for a ZR2). Either Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T’s, or Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws. The closest tire shop will be miles away; and and I’d need to make it some distance in case of a puncture. I have two questions, the first of which is most important: 1.) with a stock aluminum rim, 18” x 8.5”, will the spare carrier need to be assisted with a y-strap, or would it be alright to hang it up and forget it? Picture of the rim will be posted below. 2.) Will this tire/wheel combo fit under the truck without any issues? I'm not doing any high speed driving, except on the highway, and I won’t be doing any Baja or stump jumping with it. At most, the trails will be a little sketchy and I’ll be taking it slow.
