Horn When Using Key

Well, forum seems a little slow tonight and I'm a bit bored so I'll ask a dumb question. I searched for this a couple times too but didn't come up with the right topic.

The horn in my 09' Sierra goes off honking as if the panic button was hit whenever I use the key to unlock the driver door. I usually use the remote unlock but every now and again I use the key. I know someone here probably has the answer. Thanks.

I noticed something odd too. The other day, I used remote start---and then went to unlock the door with the key and the alarm went off. Thought that to be a little peculiar.

Good point Jonathan, forgot about that. I think mine did the same thing. Sharp looking truck BTW.

Answer: security system thinks that someone broke in because the remote was not used to open the locks. try locking the doors with the door lock and then using the key and you will find the sec system does not go off.

Nailed it right on the head. If unlocking the door with the key would disarm the alarm, it would be near worthless to have the alarm since someone good with a lock pick could just disable it. Same thing if you lock the door with the remote or the button on the door, if you pull the knob up and open the door, alarm goes off. If I remember correctly, even hitting the button on the door won't disarm the alarm, don't quote me on this one.

Right, you either have to turn it off with the panic button, or put the key into the ignition. Funny thing too...this is discussed in the owners manual. I was wondering if anyone here ever bothered to read theirs. I used mine today to get the low beam headlight part number so that I can replace them. Other than that, never really looked at it much.

Guilty as charged. Sorry, I was away from my truck/owners manual when I finally remembered the question. Thanks for the answer. I always lock the truck with the button on the door so that explains the horn going off. That's actually a pretty good feature.
