2003 2500hd Tranny Cable Question

Hi All,

I have a 2003 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 6.0L gasser with the 480 tranny.

This morning, I take it on a trip to the bank, pull into a parking space and try to shift into park.....lever is freewheeling! What the heck? :D

Put the emergency brake on, turn the truck off and climb underneath to see what is up.

The shifter cable fell off the shift lever of the transmission. OK, how did that happen? I tried squeezing it back on with vice grips, but no luck. I tried searching out the schematic on GMpartsdirect.com and no luck. I don't know if something fell off, or if it rusted off or what.

My questions are:

  1. How does the cable attach to the lever? Is there something that is supposed to clamp onto it and hold it in place?
  2. Does anyone have a schematic so I can see what attaches to what?
  3. Any other ideas would be helpful....currently I have bailing wire twisted around the end to hold it in place.

Thanks!

Anyone? I'm getting ready to just drop the $100 for new parts, but would appreciate a little guidence before I do. It would be nice if it was something simple that I'm missing.

Thanks

Its held in place with a "C" clip usually...and the clip probably rusted out.

It looks like this

Thats from a Camaro with a 4l80e....but it should look very similar
