Steering Wheel Noisy

My 2500HD squeaks when you turn the wheel. The brother in law is a mechanic and said that GM's do that and there is not much that can be done. My fiancie's 04 grand am does the same. Is it worth taking the steering column cover off and spraying some silicon in the seal? Can it be done? I have never taking one off a GM before and not even sure if it can be access easily. Does anyone have a pic of the offending part and know if there is anything that can be done? If it has to be changed is it hard?

 

Its also not the noise and clunking you hear from the intermdiate shaft bearing that needs to be greased. It sounds like inside the cab right in the steering.

My 94 Mustang GT just started a squeeking noise when turning the wheel, really loud! Not sure if it is because of it needs to be greased, but sure sounds like it. With your truck, have you tried spraying some lube on the entire steering colum under the hood? I does mine done with fluid film once or twice a year, mainly to retard any rusting from road salt and water. I never had any type of squeeking problems before. I did have a loud noise coming from my 96 blazer earlier this year. This was becuase a hose was leaking and causing power steering fluid to leak out. Was a simple inexpensive fix.. With your problem, dose the steering assembly with silcon spray or WD 40 and see if noise goes away. This way if it does go away, you will know it was a lube problem, or lack there of.

Matt my truck just started doing the same thing. I tried WD40 with no results. I think I may have ti take everything apart and start spraying..

My 01 Silverado did that from the day it was new. I guess I just got used to it because it was still doing it when I sold it at about 90K.

my 2500 does the same thing all the guys at work says their truck does it to then i found out my dads avalanche does the same thing accually had a recall on his i believe its where the washers on the inside of the collum is made out of a plastic that wore faster than gm anticipated and leaks grease by them thats where u get the poping noise from being its dry. also from what im told is they are replaced with metal ones if you dont fix it i have heard cases where people didnt fix it and the collum broke and they lost their stearing. check with your gm dealer ship to see what needs to be done.

Hey. Is this "squeaking" noise maybe the contacts of the clock spring under the steering wheel. My '03 1500HD with only 40k miles and our '98 Volvo V90 with 176K miles both have a version of this type of noise. It's not a loud obtrusive noise, just a enough to hear if the stereo is turned down........
