Oem Wheel Options For 2500hd

Looking to upgrade to 17 or 18" OEM wheels, that would fit a 2006 2500hd. I currently have the 16" steel wheels. Also, I thought I had read, if going to larger wheels, I need larger rotors. Is this correct?

You won't need larger rotors, but having the larger wheels will give you more room for larger rotors if you wanted to upgrade.

I was wondering in the 2007+ NBS 17" alloys would fit my 2006?

 

Yes, they will fit fine.

I strongly advise getting bigger rotors if you upgrade. You will notice less stopping power with bigger wheels. It shouldn't make it where you would fail at a state inspection center, but you won't have as good as stopping as you do know. It will feel like it is kinda sluggish in slowing down real fast. I remember a time upgrading a 13" to a 15", the brakes were very sluggish after the upgrade. Then one day some idiot cut the guy off in front of him and he had to come to a sudden stop and so did myself and I winded up hitting him in the rear. No damage to him, but my car had some. Likely for me some passer by chased the guy down and got his plates and the police were able to catch him.

 

After that incident, i never vowed again to go bigger without upgrading the brakes. Rule of thumb, if you go 17" wheel, then slap on some 17" rotors. Better safe then sorry, especially if you are towing without a brake controller.

Although this can be true, I really think it depends on the type of wheels and tires, as well as the overall braking of the vehicle. Considering the OP is looking to go from 16" steel to 17" alloy, there is actually a chance his braking will improve due to less weight. I know of lots of guys running hummer wheels and 305 tires and they don't have any braking issues at all, and one of those is on a 2006.

 

Also, there's a lot more to it than just getting larger rotors. He'd have to also get now calipers, and I'm not sure about mounting if there is a bracket or if the additional offset needed is built into the new calipers or not. Regardless, I doubt he'll notice any decline in braking so it's probably not something worth worrying about.

Also, one thing I'm wondering. Even if the wheels themselves end up weighing a little more, wouldn't the tires weigh less (assuming a similar overall diameter) due to less sidewall?

The 07.5+ 17" wheels will fit just fine, although I think the H2 Hummer wheels with the 07.5+ 8 lug caps off the PYO wheels look good, I run them on my truck here is a pic.

I also have the Hummer wheel on my OBS HD2500....I went with 265x70x17 tires and have had no braking issues at all....I did have Blackbear doe a tune to reset the speedometer (as well as a performance tune). No issues at all in 2+ years....

Ignoring the brake cooling aspect, wheel diameter has no impact on brake performance. larger diameter (aka taller) TIRES will make a huge difference. For those of use who went from the stock 245/75-16 tires on our HD trucks to a 285/75-16, the brakes have to work about 7% harder to stop the truck. Said a different way, it's like making your truck 7% heavier from the perspective of the brakes. For most of these trucks, it's like having an extra 500 lbs in the bed of the truck......

The H2 wheels look to be a good option, as they are widely available. At about 300$ for 4 not bad. I take it that the center caps I have for the 16" wheels will not fit. For an 06 2500, it is a direct bolt up?

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
