radio swap

I have a 2002 3/4 ton HD.  I plan on swapping my stock radio(just a radio, no cd player or cassette) with a stock cd player unit(one that comes in the LS model).  How difficult is it to change?  What do I have to do to get the trim ring off?  What all do I have to do after that?

I plan on getting one from a salvage yard.  How much should I be looking to spend?

And how do I make sure that the theft-lock is off?

The dash bezel (trim ring) snaps out.  The easiest place to start is on the corner of the dash on the driver's side just above the vent.  Carefully unsnap and work your way across to the right.  You will have to move the gearshift lever to remove the whole bezel.  This will give you access to everything.  Just a couple of snaps on each side holding the radio in place (push lever down to release) and an antenna plug and power/speaker connector on the back.  Reverse the order to reinstall replacement factory unit.

As for the theftlock, it is a gamble to get one that is disabled from the salvage yard.  Many people I know don't even realize the radios have this feature and don't have it set.  If it is locked, you could try the 000 code or if all else fails--the dealer can unlock the radio.

carguru has it down pat. its really easy the radio plugs should hook right up into the ls cd play radio... put your emergency brake on and move the shifter all the way to 1st and you'll be able to take off the entire bezel

Hello, Since this is my first post and I must make 5 post before I can start a new thread I am reviving this thread in hopes that someone will help me.

My Son in law gave me a radio (AM/FM, Cassette, and CD) along with the speakers from his 2004 GMC 1/2 tom.

He had an aftermarket one installed for what he says "Better sound quality". I think not.

I want to put this radio in a VW Baja (12 volt) but I need the plug and a wiring diagram. Where can I obtain these?

I spoke to a GM Service Manager and he said he could re-set the code for me. Do I go to a Junk Yard for the plug or can I purchase one elsewhere?

Thanks, Marvin

Pretty creative there Marvin.

You can purchase a plug at any decent car stereo shop. Metra and other companies make them. I bought one for a GM radio I put in a motor home. I think it was about 8 bucks. The stereo shop was even able to provide me with a wiring diagram. Otherwise, As far as wiring goes, any Haynes manual or even Alldata.com can hook you up there. Some aftermatket plugs even come with a diagram.

Good luck.

Now another problem. I found the Metra plug #71-2003-1 for my GM radio #15104156 and e-mailed metra about where I could pick the plug up. Here is the reply from Metra Tech Support.

Quote: You will not be able to use that GM radio in your '67 VW. The GM radio uses a digital system to turn the radio on. Therefore there is no way we can reproduce the information to turn on that factory radio.

End Quote

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can bypass and get it to work?

Thanks, Marvin

PS----I wonder if Tech Support is talking about the theft lock code. If so my GM Dealer said he could unlock it for me.

there is no work around

Thanks for the responses.

pentavolvo, you are correct. I went to my GM dealer and was told it had to go back into a similar vehicle. He said that the seat belts, engine warning system and the air bags were all connected together along with the radio into some sort of module.

Anyway, I met a guy who needs my radio for his '04 Chevy and I will trade with him even if he can get me an AM/FM, CD, and Tape player aftermarket radio that I can put into my Bug

Thanks again, Marvin

PS. And for everyone who unselfishly helps Folks on this forum, my hat is off to you.
