Intermediate Steering Shaft

Has anyone ever thought about tapping in a couple of grease fittings and using high temp grease on the shafts to eliminate the clunking?

Just a thought.

Or, has anyone found replacement parts that provide a permanent fix?

I had mine replaced under warranty last year on my 2006.

There is a service bulletin out on it, they have to realize they're going to have to make it a recall soon. I had an 03,04 and now an 06. All three had the problem.

I wonder if you used high temp grease with the exhaust manifold there and all.

Greasing the shaft is all the lub kit from gm does which lasted me about 6 months.

No more than once a year, I spend 15 minutes removing one bolt from the stock I-shaft that came in my 2003 2500HD, and fully collapsing and extending it to 'spread' the grease back out to make the noise go away. I'm sure eventually I'll have to actually add grease, but I've had the truck 7 years and so far so good. If it were hard to do, maybe I'd complain more, but I usually do it while the oil is draining for the oil change.

Just my opinion, but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle to put zerks in just to pump grease into the shaft that will eventually fill the boot with grease that will end up getting warm and glopping out on my driveway.

I bought a 99 Silv in Sept of 98 and after they figured it out, that bulletin came out in the spring of 99, eleven years ago. The feds won't make them recall it unless it is danger to the operation of the vehicle, it's passengers, or others. Bad design we will all have to just live with.

Never thought of taking the shaft out and working the grease around. I thought I was going to have to get another lub kit. I would think any high temp grease would do just as good.

GM calls the procedure stroking the shaft.

I went out of my way to AVOID using that phrase....didn't want to get kicked off the list! :dunno:

Guess I'm going to stroke my shaft this weekend. I've got plenty of grease on hand.

Whatever floats your boat.

There's no need to tell us how it went.........

I have a clunk coming from my steering shaft area now that i can hear and feel in the wheel and is getting progressively worse with time. How do i tell it is this shaft that everyone complains of? It is driving me nuts.

Can someone post some pictures of the procedure, i am wanting to tackle mine that has been clunking for years.

Do you notice it more while turning and over bumps? Thats when mine does it most
