Ready For Exhaust

Recommended Posts

Well I've already searched around and read a few posts, but I never really could tell what was recommended the most. So I was gonna post what I have going on, what I'm wanting, and lets see what type of exhaust some of you more knowledgeable ones think I should get.

I have an 04 2500 crew cab with the 6.0L. I'm looking for a nice sounding exhaust. I'm not looking at being the one making all the noise at a stop light, just something that sounds like music to people's ears when they hear it. Basically, I'm thinking magnaflow right now. But my problem is, I'm not sure whether to go DI/DO, DI/SO, or just true dual. I'm tempted to go with a true dual exhaust, leaving the stock cats that are already on it and just getting new mufflers installed and rear exit. But from what I've heard about the 6.0L is that it does need a good bit of back pressure to keep the low end torque. So I'm not sure if a true dual would kill too much back pressure or not.

However, with an engine as big as a 6.0L, I feel like just having all the exhaust go to a single muffler would be too much back pressure. But this is just my thinking.

What do yall think?

I noticed an increase in power with true dual with my Gibson dual extreme. My friend has exact same truck as me, minus BFG tires and I accelerate better then his.

Alright! Good to know! I looked underneath the truck for a quick glance at what is there right now the other day. It looked to me like with the fact that the truck has two cats installed on it already, all I really have to do is purchase the new mufflers. I hear the cats that are on there are free flow and don't really need replacing. What's your opinion on this?

I left the kitty's on, your stock exhaust is only 3" from muffler outlet - tip. All in all the stock exhaust is very well made and will last a lifetime, but lacks the aggressive sound and T-304 SS. Consider having it welded on, I intially had mine installed with the clamps it came with, but it started to leak later on, so then I had it welded.

I bought the Single out Magnaflow Cat-back system for mine and it sounds great!!!! its dual in and 4" single out with a 4"tip its a really nice system deff. worth the $...i bought it off the internet for around $450 had a local exhaust shop install for $50

p.s. the kit i bought was for an ext. cab short bed so thats why i took it to the shop but the tailpipe and muffler hangup real nice after shortining the inlet pipes and welding them back in.(Reason they dont make a reg. cab cat back)

It has to be under 4" out to fit he 4" tip. Most systems are 2.75 out to a 3" pipe. You really don't want to exceed 3" on these trucks as it is not so good for BP.

Alright! This is good stuff! A lot of help! Hearing what yall have said and what I've already read I'm thinking I'm just going to leave everything stock up to the cats, run pipe straight back to 2 magnaflows with 2.75 inlets and 3" outlets making it a true dual.

Now, my last question. I know that the way the exhaust exits under the cab can also affect drone and resonance that you hear inside th cab. Any recommendations on rear exhaust or side exhaust (behind the tires of course)?

Alright! Thanks! I think that's what I'm gonna wind up doing unless I relocate my spare tire to the bed of my truck. Haven't quite decided yet on that one. Thank you for the help though guys!

You may want to re-think your tail pipe size from the mufflers back... "2.25" - 2.5 inch being the biggest I'd go for pipeing after the mufflers..As stated before, you will loose to much back pressure if you go bigger..Post up some pics & sound when your done...

My last truck I did the rear bumper exit, but this one I wanted to do the side exits on each side. I think it looks better and alot of trucks that have after market dual pipes didn't have this look at the time. Also make sure you purchase a stainless steal package, I opted for the T-304 stainless steal which cost a little more. My prior truck I didn't get SS (actually don't think they offered it at the time). Anyway, within 4 years rot destroyed one of the pipes and the muffler was also starting to show signs of rot. Also if you do side exits like mine, if you don't have mud flaps on rear wheels, consider putting them on. Even though they tend to look not so good imo, they will help protect your pipes and body panel.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
