Severe Rear Wheel Hop

The truck in my sig has developed a severe rear wheel hop in 2wd when the rear locker kicks in. For example tonight I was going through about 4 inches of wet snow when the locker locked. As I kept crawling along the truck developed a rear wheel hop that felt like it was going to shake the bed off the truck.

 

There is 23K miles on the truck and it still has the original shocks. Is it possible they are shot? If so what shocks do you recommend? I've heard good things on here about the Monroes and the price is very reasonable.

Well your shocks may only have 23,000 miles, but your trucks 5 years old. They certainly could be shot, and I'd consider replacing with Bilsteins. BTW... I see your from grove city. We use to camp near there at Kozy Rest. Have you been there before?

I figured that since the truck is older that the shocks could definatly be the culprit. Down the road it rides fine, but as shocks wear you don't notice it because it is so gradual.

 

I've never camped at Kozy Rest but I have been there before. It's less than 10 miles from my house. I have my 5th wheel set up at a member owned campground in Mercer PA (Plantation Park).

Mine will do it worse when I have 80 pounds of air in rear tires for towing,seems less severe when I air down. plowking

It is your shocks. I had 138,000 on the stockers. And driving in 2-3 inches of sleet made my truck axle hop so bad I couldn't go anywhere. I had to put it in 4wd just to move anywhere and I couldn't go. As soon as I put my Bilsteins on, the hop was greatly reduced. It does still hop a little but the tire pressure and spring rate of the leafs still affects the hop. I just drove last week in 4 inches of snow and I can now go anywhere in 2wd because the hop is reduced.

 

And quick FYI, GM probably knew about this because the new HD's have twin tube shocks on the Z71 shocks and my parents' new HD doesn't hop at all on the same road that I took my truck on.

I run 55 psi in my rear 265/75/16 E's when empty. 65 psi in the fronts. I'm guessing the shocks must be junk.

When I replaced the oem shocks on my previous 03' HD, at 45k, they were junk. All 4 ! When collapsed thats where they stayed, no rebound action.

+1 on the Bilsteins. Huuuuge improvement over the oem's. That will be my first mod on my current truck.
